Does one need experience in industry to be a competitive MSFE applicant?
While you do not need previous work experience to apply or to gain acceptance, we do find that some work or internship experience may prove valuable for both.
Do I need to send official GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, etc. scores to apply?
We do not require you to send official scores to apply to the program. However, if offered admission, these documents will be required to validate the offer off admission.
Does one need to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or PET to apply?
International students who do not have a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an institution in which all instruction is conducted in English must take either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), the PTE (Pearson Test of English), or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). You may be exempted only if you have earned a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction. We will not accept requests for exceptions to this policy. Your scores must be valid when you submit your application.
Be sure to self-report your TOEFL, PTE, or IELTS score when completing your application. If admitted, you must submit an official score report. For the TOEFL, Columbia’s ETS code is 2141. For the PTE and IELTS, select Columbia Business School from the list of schools provided. The Admissions Committee will consider only your highest score when reviewing your application.

Professional Designations
The coursework in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) specialization is designed to help you pass the CFA Level I Exam. The completion of the CFA program is considered one of the highest distinctions in the investment management profession. The department provides competitive scholarships to offset part of the cost of taking the exam. The curriculum in the Personal Financial Planning (PFP ) specialization is registered through the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) Board of Standards. The successful completion of the program qualifies you to sit for the CFP exam, which is the standard of excellence in financial planning.
Preparation for the CFA Exam
The MFE curriculum is designed to help students pass the first CFA exam (i.e., Level I exam) at the end of their second semester in the program. The department provides competitive scholarships to offset part of the cost of taking the exam.
Preparation for the CFP Exam
The MFE curriculum is designed to help students pass the Certified Financial Planning (CFP) exam at the end of their second semester in the program. If a student wants to join the national Financial Planning Association (FPA) chapter as an “ Aspiring Financial Planner ,” the club is willing to pay half of the annual membership fee, which is $50. Benefits include, but are not limit to, $200 off CFP exam, subscription to the FPA journal, next gen magazine, Forbes magazine, and discounted fees to various professional conferences.

The Master of Science in Financial Economics (MSFE) program launched in Fall 2021. The program emphasizes modern quantitative methods in financial economics and econometrics. Students are taught the theories that guide financial practices and the highly sought after analytical skills necessary to perform advanced financial analyses.
UW-Madison’s rich tradition in economics and econometrics ( top 10 US News and World Report ranking ) and finance puts it in a unique position to provide the rigorous training offered by this program.
The Master of Science in Financial Economics is a designated STEM degree program that will provide the theoretical knowledge, analytical skills and real-world experience to launch a successful career. As a joint program between the Wisconsin School of Business ’ Finance Department and the Department of Economics , students have access to faculty and services in both areas — including access to the first-rate Finance Analytics Lab with specialized Bloomberg terminals.

Fees and funding
The fee for 2023-24 is £52,560 for both home and overseas students, which includes lifelong Oxford Union membership.
If you are are offered a place on the programme you must pay a non-refundable deposit of £7,900 to secure your place. The deposit is due around 30 days after notification of acceptance. This amount will be offset against your fees.
Tuition fees must be paid in full by the programme start date in September.

The M.S. in Quantitative Financial Economics (MQFE) is designed for students who are seeking the greater depth and rigor that are increasingly required by advanced academic programs, as well as in the private sector. If your goal is to prepare yourself and improve your candidacy for a Ph.D. program in finance at a top business school, then this is the program for you. Equally, if you would like to improve your skills in quantitative financial analysis to enter, or move to the next level, in your career in finance, our program can help you to achieve this goal. This program is unique in offering advanced courses in volatility modeling, analysis of high-frequency data, and continuous time finance, as these are areas of expertise within the financial economics group at Duke .
Students' course selections are based on their specific interests and on recommendations made by their academic advisors in order to meet their longer-run goals. In addition to taking a variety of master's-level courses, students with sufficient preparation will be encouraged to enroll in a combination of doctoral-level courses in financial economics and financial econometrics. The curriculum can be completed in either three or four semesters. Throughout their participation in the program, students compile a portfolio that tracks their academic growth and showcases their accomplishments. The portfolio is composed of research papers, presentations, and other professional documents. It serves as a valuable tool for applying both to jobs and doctoral programs.

Course Details
Certain courses in the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science may be counted as electives towards the 30-credit requirement with advance approval; however, students must complete a minimum of 24 credits in Department of Economics courses. Per Graduate School policy, to count toward the 30-credit requirement, all courses must be at the 500 level or above.
It is the policy of The Graduate School that undergraduate courses (499 or lower) do not count towards the M.A. degree or a student's GPA. Courses that are cross-listed as both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses count towards the M.A. degree and a student's GPA only if they have a separate, more rigorous syllabus for graduate students. It is the student's responsibility to verify that this is the case before enrolling in any cross-listed courses.

What You'll Study
The Financial Economics graduate program prepares you to make critical business decisions for organizations, exploring financial management on the corporate level and strengthening your skills in other areas of finance and accounting.
You'll analyze microeconomic and macroeconomic models and study how to manage financial capital and interpret stock valuations. The master's program also focuses on preparing you to advance your career in banking, insurance and financial advising with an internship component.
All graduate students take 10 core economics courses. You then choose electives from a set of economics, mathematics and finance courses, including an option to complete an internship.

Economics - Financial Economics
The Financial Economics sequence provides students training in the financial theory of the firm, financial markets and institutions to complement their training in applied economics analysis. It is designed for students who have an interest in employment opportunities in the financial sector such as investment and commercial banks, economic and financial asset management companies, and consulting firms, or who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree. This is a STEM designated degree, which focuses on the systematic study of mathematical and statistical analysis of economic phenomena and problems. STEM designated degree programs offer additional benefits for students, including potential grant funded opportunities and, for international students, extended OPT study options.

How to Apply
University admission requirements.
A student applying to a master's program must:
- have earned a four-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a college or university that is accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting association, or do so within one academic year
- present unofficial transcripts from each college or university other than Illinois State at which graduate, undergraduate, or non-degree credit was earned. The unofficial transcript should be easily readable and clearly indicate degree(s) awarded, courses and course grades for each term. If accepted, official transcripts can be emailed from the university to [email protected] or mailed in a sealed envelope to: Illinois State University, Graduate School , 209 Hovey Hall, Campus Box 4040, Normal, IL 61790-4040.

Additional Program Admission Requirements
A student admitted in the program must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for either the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework or any previous work in a master’s program. For admission without deficiencies, applicants need to have successfully completed college courses in:
- basic calculus and statistics
- intermediate microeconomic and macroeconomic theory
Students who do not meet these coursework requirements can still be admitted into the program but will have to take additional classes.
Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
Applicants need to have a quantitative score of 150 or better, and a verbal score of 140 or better. Use institutional code 1319 to submit GRE scores.
Letters of Recommendation
This program requires three (3) letters of recommendation. At least two of the letters of recommendation should come from individuals who are familiar with your scholarly record. The third can be an additional academic reference or a professional reference from someone who knows you well and can comment on your potential as a graduate student. After you submit the e-mail addresses of your letter writers in the online application system, they will be automatically e-mailed a link to submit their letters electronically.

- a current resume or C.V.
- a two-page statement of purpose explaining your interest in the Financial Economics graduate sequence at Illinois State University, your academic and professional goals, and what you hope to achieve as a graduate student in Economics
International Students
In addition to the above requirements, international applicants need to submit:
- Minimum TOEFL Scores: 79 for internet-based test (iBT)
- Minimum IELTS Score: 6.5 band
- Minimum Duolingo Score: 105

Application Deadlines
- Fall Term — March 1 - with financial support consideration
- Fall Term — June 15 - financial support consideration is not guaranteed

- Summer Term — No applications are accepted for the summer term
Graduate Assistantships
The University provides graduate assistantships as a means of financial support. They are intended as a way to facilitate a student's progress to degree while providing important professional development.
Eligibility
To be eligible for an assistantship a student must, generally,
- be admitted unconditionally as a degree-seeking student into a graduate academic program, or have a minimum of 120 undergraduate hours if in an integrated degree program
- be in good-standing
- be enrolled full-time (typically at least 9 credit hours during the fall or spring semesters, or at least 6 hours during the summer session).
Graduate assistants receive
- monthly wages paid in the form of either a stipend or an hourly wage
- a waiver for 100% of tuition during a semester of appointment
- a waiver for up to 12 credit hours of tuition for the summer term immediately following a fall or spring appointment

See Student Accounts for information on tuition and fees. Funding for graduate students is available from several different sources. Students who have been admitted from contiguous states including Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin will receive in-state tuition.
