Graduate School
Phd programs.
If you have obtained a Master degree you can decide to do a PhD, which means you choose to get more deeply involved in research and you are at the beginning of a scientific career. The TU/e Graduate School offers you an extensive range of PhD programs across all departments of the university.
Increase the depth of your research topic
Over a period of four years you develop the capability to carry out independent research. Under the supervision of a professor, you work on a topic that fascinates you and into which you carry out further research. That means you need plenty of curiosity and motivation to increase the depth of your research topic.
Doing a PhD at Eindhoven
There are different options for doing a PhD at Eindhoven. Most PhD candidates will be hired by Eindhoven University of Technology. In that case, you have to apply for an announced and specific PhD position. If you are accepted, you will have the status of a TU/e employee during the four years doing your PhD. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment.
However, if you have obtained a scholarship - for instance from your national government or some independent foundation - you may opt to apply for a PhD program at TU/e. First step is then to find a professor that is willing to advise you on your project.

Title ( PDF )
Machine Learning in Space Weather: Forecasting, Identification & Uncertainty Quantification.
The study of variations in the space environment between the Sun and the Earth constitutes the core of space weather research. Plasma ejected by the Sun couples with the Earth’s magnetic field in complex ways that determine the state of the Earth’s magnetosphere. Adverse effects from space weather can impact communication networks, power grids and lo- gistics infrastructure, all crucial pillars of a civilization that is reliant on technology.
It is important to use data sources, scientific knowledge and statistical techniques to create space weather forecasting and monitoring systems of the future. This thesis aims to be a step towards that goal.

PhD defense: Responsibilities in a Datafied Health Environment

Chirag Arora will defend his thesis at the 6th of December at 13:30.
Atlas Building room 0.710, TU Eindhoven
Description of the thesis
Characterized by an accelerating rise in the collection and analysis of quantified data, the healthcare sector is witnessing rapid ‘’datafication’’. Health datafication is driven by technologies that enable the collection of large sets of data, such as wearable health devices, as well as computational technologies, including machine learning techniques, that can process such big data. Proponents of the health datafication phenomenon have emphasized how it can empower citizens by allowing them to take control of their health as well as monitor aspects of their health that would have previously been impossible to track unaided. Critics, however, point out that health datafication can also diminish our understanding of individual health, for example, by privileging narrowly construed quantified ways of knowing over rich understandings of what healthy behavior is. Another worry is that health datafication shifts the responsibility of healthcare from institutional actors such as medical professionals and policymakers to individual users. This shift in responsibility, and focus on individual responsibility for health, is particularly worrying considering the valuable labor of a multitude of actors, including technologists and designers, required to reap the benefits of health datafication. This work explores and explicates the role these various sets of actors play in conjunction with each other, and in particular the moral, legal, social, and epistemic responsibilities such actors have in facilitating successful health inquiry within the datafied health paradigm. Understanding the roles and responsibilities of these varied sets of actors is crucial in designing a datafied health system that combines expertise beneficially and avoids potential pitfalls.
