The Tragedy of Hamlet

Arguably the best piece of writing ever done by William Shakespeare, Hamlet the is the classic example of a tragedy. In all tragedies the hero suffers, and usually dies at the end. Othello stabs himself, Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, Brutis falls on his sword, and like them Hamlet dies by getting cut with a poison tipped sword. But that is not all that is needed to consider a play a tragedy, and sometimes a hero doesn’t even need to die. Not every play in which a Hero dies is considered a tragedy. There are more elements needed to label a play one.

Probably the most important element is an amount of free will. In every tragedy, the characters must displays some. If every action is controlled by a hero’s destiny, then the hero’s death can’t be avoided, and in a tragedy the sad part is that it could. Hamlet’s death could have been avoided many times. Hamlet had many opportunities to kill Claudius, but did not take advantage of them. He also had the option of making his claim public, but instead he chose not too. A tragic hero doesn’t need to be good. For example, MacBeth was evil, yet he was a tragic hero, because he had free will.

He also had only one flaw, and that was pride. He had many good traits such as bravery, but his one bad trait made him evil. Also a tragic hero doesn’t have to die. While in all Shakespearean tragedies, the hero dies, in others he may live but suffer “Moral Destruction”. In Oedipus Rex, the proud yet morally blind king plucks out his eyes, and has to spend his remaining days as a wandering, sightless beggar, guided at every painful step by his daughter, Antigone. A misconception about tragedies is that nothing good comes out of them, but it is actually the opposite.

In Romeo and Juliet, although both die, they end the feud between the Capulets and the Montegues. Also, Romeo and Juliet can be together in heaven. In Hamlet, although Hamlet dies, it is almost for the best. How could he have any pleasure during the rest of his life, with his parents and Ophelia dead. Also, although Hamlet dies, he is able to kill Claudius and get rid of the evil ruling the throne. Every tragic play must have a tragic hero. The tragic hero must possess many good traits, as well as one flaw, which eventually leads to his downfall.

A tragic hero must be brave and noble. In Othello, Othello had one fatal flaw, he was too great. Othello was too brave, too noble, and especially too proud to allow himself to be led back to Venice in chains. A tragic hero must not back down from his position. He also has to have free will, in order to stand up for what he believes in. Finally, the audience must have some sympathy for the tragic hero. In MacBeth, although MacBeth commits many murders, one almost feels sorry for him and his fate. Hamlet is the perfect example of the tragic hero.

Hamlet has all the good traits needed to be a tragic hero. He is brave and daring. One example of this is that when he went to England, he was taking a big risk. If his plan didn’t work, he would have been executed He also is also loyal. His loyalty to his father, was the reason he was so angry at Claudius and his Mother. Another trait was that he was intelligent. He was able to think up the idea of faking insanity, in order to get more information about Claudius. But Hamlet like all other tragic hero’s had a flaw. He couldn’t get around to doing anything, because he couldn’t move on.

He was a full grown adult, yet he still attended school in England, because he couldn’t move on. Also, it took him a long time to stop grieving about his father, because he didn’t want to move past that part of his life. And after he finally did, Hamlet couldn’t get around to killing Claudius. He kept pretending he was insane even after he was sure that Claudius killed his father. The final example of Hamlet’s inability to get around to do anything was that he was dating Ophelia for a long time, but never got around to marrying her.

The audience was able to feel sympathy for Hamlet too. He had just lost his father, and his mother remarried so quickly that according to him they could have used the leftover food from the funeral in the wedding reception. Also, the audience could feel that Hamlet loved his parents and this sudden change was hurting him. In any tragedy there is a tragic hero, and he must possess certain characteristics in order to be one. He must have many good traits such as loyalty and bravery, but one bad one such as pride. Also the audience must have sympathy for the hero.

A tragic hero also must have free will or his fate would be decided for him, and his death could be avoided. Finally, the audience must have sympathy for the tragic hero, or it wouldn’t seem so tragic. Hamlet is a perfect example of a tragic hero. He was brave, loyal, and intelligent, but he couldn’t move on past one thing, which led to his death. He had a choice of how he would deal with Claudius, and like other tragic hero’s made a decision. Also, the audience was able to feel sympathy for the position Hamlet was in. These attributes made Hamlet the perfect example of a tragic hero.

The tragedy of Hamlet has remained a mystery to many people. Over the years, many people have questioned if the Hamlet fits the description of a tragedy outlined by Aristotle in the poetics. In a classic tragedy, there is a noble and heroic protagonist whose destruction is caused by a flaw in his character. Aristotle further defines a classic tragedy as one that ends in a tragic death of the protagonist. Although this is often the case, the hero experiences an awareness, which makes him and the audience more perceptive and aware. By looking at the Hamlet, one does not fail to notice that it fits the description outlined by Aristotle of a classic tragedy.

Aristotle further describes a tragic hero to be someone who has royalty blood in him. This becomes important so that the hero can suffer the predicament of falling from glory. To begin with, Hamlet is born in a royal family. On top of this, he had been crowned as the prince of Denmark something that made him royal. After he kills Polonius, he is exiled in to England, which can be defined as a fall from grace to grass. This is a clear description of a tragic hero.

According to Aristotle, a tragic hero must also set out on a journey. This can be a real journey or one that is just symbolic. This is evident in the play. In the first instant, Hamlet travels to England in exile. Even though the journey is not by his own volition, it is a journey nevertheless. After the ghost reveals to him the events surrounding his fathers death, Hamlet sets out on a symbolic journey to avenge this death. This gives him an opportunity for self-rediscovery. This literal and symbolic journey taken by Hamlet makes the play fit the description of a tragedy as outlined by Aristotle.

After Hamlet has encountered the ghost, he sets out on a mission meant to kill the king. To the reader, this mission is so clear that we expect him to kill the king upon their first encounter. Even after he is presented with a good opportunity to do so, Hamlet does not exact out his revenge. Though the reason for this is not given, we are left to conclude that this indecision is caused by Hamlet’s character. He seems to be weak willed and appears undetermined.

This is not just a character he has suddenly attained but it is something that appears to be inborn. Therefore, we can conclusively conclude that Hamlet is a tragedy of fault. The protagonist seems to carry in him a burden that is too big for him. Despite his attempt at bravery, he is weak willed and unable to make some important decisions. Again, this is a flaw in his character.

When Hamlet learns in a dream that he is supposed to revenge the death of his father, he promises to pursue this revenge without any delay. In fact, Hamlet lets go of everything else in his life to devote his time and energies in exerting this revenge. To Hamlet, even his life’s dreams and destiny cannot be compared to this new pursuit. Immediately after this discovery, Hamlet is at a loss on why he has to be the one chosen to exert this revenge. This is the first indication we get that Hamlet has a weakness in his character. Instead of seeking for ways to kill the person who cut short the life of his father, Hamlet begins to wonder why a sane person can carry out such an act.

To a scrutinizing eye, this is something meant to procrastinate his mission of revenge. This is something that even Hamlet cannot seem to comprehend. Upon realizing that he is dreading carrying out his mission, he comforts himself by saying that he is no coward. However, we his audience know better than to believe his words. Hamlet postpones this mission further by seeking to verify the words of the ghost. However, the trap that he sets to confirm this soon ‘snaps’ but he still cannot make a meaningful decision.

Even though Hamlet learns that his mother was a co-conspirator in his father’s death, she dissuades him from killing her. Although we might all conclude that Hamlet is overtaken by love for his mother, this is something that does not befit a hero. A true hero should not let emotions come in the way of his mission. Upon learning of his mother’s role in the death of his father, he knows that he has to punish the perpetrators regardless of their identity. When he gets this opportunity to “drink hot blood, and do such bitter business as the day”, (III 2) he fails to master the courage needed to achieve this. At this moment, his mind seems to be a battlefield. On one hand, he knows that he has to avenge the death of his father while on the other he has no courage to do it.

“Soft! Now to my mother. O heart, lose not thy nature; let not ever, The soul of Nero enter this firm bosom: Let me be cruel, not unnatural; I will speak daggers to her, but use none; My tongue and soul in this be hypocrites; How in my words soever she be shent, To give them seals never, my soul, consent!” (III 2)

This pretense to “speak daggers at his mother but act none” makes us see the coward whom Hamlet is. In order to hide his true feelings from his mother, he decides to pretend that he is insane. However, the desire to carry out this revenge remains a strong force in his life.

Immediately after this episode at his mother’s house, another opportunity presents itself for revenge. This time, it is only Hamlet and the king in an enclosed temple where there is no route for escape. Coincidentally, Hamlet goes behind the king and draws his sword ready to strike. In a real life event, this is the moment when we all draw our breath and close our eyes in anticipation of seeing fresh blood. However a few moments later, Hamlet brings us back to reality by claiming that “now might I do it pat, now he is praying; And now I’ll do’t: and so he goes to heaven… (III 3) This statement not only makes the audience release its breath but leaves it in stitches as well. Always having excuses to justify his procrastination, he tells us that he fears killing the king in a moment of repentance.

“Up, sword; and know thou a more horrid hent: When he is drunk asleep, or in his rage, Or in the incestuous pleasure of his bed. At gaining, swearing, or about some act that has no relish of salvation in’t, then trip him, that his heels may kick at heaven, And that his soul may be as damn’d and black as hell, whereto he goes. My mother stays: This physic but prolongs thy sickly days”. (III 3)

Although this is a plausible reasoning, we are all left wondering if Hamlet would really kill the king if given the right opportunity.

Soon after this, Hamlet kills Polonius while the latter is hiding behind a curtain. In fact, Hamlet only ‘makes a pass’ with his sword and in the process kills Polonius whom he presumes to be the king. Hamlet is so sure that it is the king in the “trap” that he does not bother checking to verify this. When Hamlet tries to kill the king in this instant, he does not observe his oath that he would do the act when the king was sinning.

This is a line of thought that now seems to be forgotten. What this means is that Hamlet was not genuine in his first attempt at procrastination. In fact, nowhere else in the tragedy does Hamlet seek to kill the king while he is in the process of committing iniquity. This points out clearly that the decisions taken by Hamlet are erratic. A very logic thought that comes to us is that the killing of Polonius was not an act of bravery but rather a coincidence.

Perhaps, we can even deduce that Hamlet was ready to kill the king in this new incidence since the two were not face-to-face. The other thing that comes out clearly from this action is that the acts taken by Hamlet were senseless and haphazard. The death of Polonius, which in the first place is a mistake, fits the description of a tragedy in that it is an event that Hamlet could not control.

If hamlet had been genuine about his desire to kill the king while he is the process of committing iniquity, it is only right that we see this promise being fulfilled at least in one scene. At one time, the ghost appears while hamlet is talking to his mother. Even Hamlet himself knows that he has erred by procrastinating the revenge and consoles himself by saying that he is no coward. In the monologue that follows his meeting with Fortinbras, he says that even being exiled to England would come as a respite. In order to prove that he is no coward he promises “O, from this time forth, my thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!” (IV 4) This is a promise that we do not see Hamlet fulfilling in the next chapters of the play.

In incidents where we find Hamlet sitting in the graveyard, he does not even talk of revenge. This recurs while talking to his friend Horatio. Even during the duel, there is no talk of revenge making us wonder what Hamlet’s motivation is. In the following chapters of the Hamlet, the idea of revenge seems to be completely forgotten by the hero. His promise to think of nothing but blood does not even feature anywhere until the last chapter of the book.

This again proves that Hamlet is a character who even though noble has a weak spirit. This aspect clearly fits a classic tragedy as outlined by Aristotle. In the events that follow the death, the destructive situations brought about by this flaw are evident. As outlined earlier, it is Hamlet’s weakness and lack of a strong will that make him not to kill the king in the first encounter. This indecision later on causes the death of Polonius, his daughter and a host of other people including Hamlet himself.

In the event that Hamlet had been decisive and killed the king at the first opportunity he had, he would have saved himself and others a lot of trouble. First, Polonius was merely at the wrong place at the wrong time. His death just occurred because the king had sent him to investigate the plans that Hamlet had concerning the king. This could not have happened if Hamlet had killed the king when he found him praying at the temple. The death of Ophelia is also another tragedy that is brought about by Hamlet’s weak character. Her death that comes as a direct result of her father’s demise and Hamlets indifference toward her shows that this is something that could have been avoided had Hamlet taken a decisive action at the his first opportunity at action.

The same cause of events brings about an enmity between Hamlet and Laertes. It is this enmity that later causes Hamlet’s death. Gertrude’s death is also a product of Hamlet’s indecision and weak character. If Hamlet had been courageous, he would have killed the king at the first opportunity he got hence entangling himself from the shadow of the ghost. The death of Polonius, Ophelia, Laertes and even Hamlet himself shows a stream of circumstances that Hamlet could not control since his weak character had caused them. These circumstances make Hamlet a real tragedy. Critics of the Hamlet as a tragedy should look at these circumstances and realize that it fits the description of a tragedy.

Another incident that is hard to control is the killing of the king himself. In the whole of the play, we had been expecting the king to be killed at any moment. However, his death in a way seems to be accidental. By looking at the events preceding the death, we can only think of a child who is holding a weapon but needs the intervention of a parent to guide its sharp point to its target. Although we all agree that in killing the king Hamlet avenges the death of his father and mother and even himself, we are left wondering exactly how it happened. The writer of the Hamlet does not let the death happen according to plan but it can only be seen to be an accident of some sorts. The right procedure would have been one where the king is killed in a premeditated attack.

By closely looking at the king’s death, we are left with no doubt that his death is beyond Hamlet’s control. It is clear in our minds that when Hamlet went to the duel he had no plans to kill the king. This is going by his words that he would plan to kill the king when “his soul is black”. If Hamlet had stuck to his plan, it is highly unlikely that he would have ended up killing the king. In the story, numerous procrastinations are witnessed. These procrastinations show us that Hamlet was not responsible in the killing of the king in the final act. The death of Polonius, his daughter, the queen and even Hamlet himself are events that are beyond the reach of Hamlet. This makes the play to fit the description of a tragedy as outlined by Aristotle.

Finally, the Hamlet fits the description of a classic tragedy from what happens at the end of the play. In a classic tragedy, although the hero dies he experiences a perception that makes him and the audience more aware of their surroundings. As the play ends, Hamlet dies along a host of other characters. By this time, it is clear that Hamlet knows his death is approaching and fast at that. Just before the duel, Hamlet is seen to admonish himself for not having carried out the revenge earlier on. “Not a whit, we defy augury; there’s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, ’tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come: the readiness is all: since no man has aught of what he leaves, what is’t to leave betimes?” (V 2)The audience is also aware of this fact.

At this time, Hamlet does not have time to think of revenge, which was his initial mission. By killing the king, Hamlet is merely driven by anger toward the poisoning of his mother. In the play, we see Hamlet saying, “Drink off this potion. Is thy union here?” Follow my mother”. (V 4)This is evident to the audience.

Again, Hamlet knows and so does the audience that he only has a short time to live owing to the poison that is in his blood. It is this knowledge that drives Hamlet to kill the king before he dies. During the final act, there is no mention of the former king and therefore everyone knows that the present king is not killed for his old sins. It this final act, it is the heroes death and the awareness that he is about to die by both himself and the audience that makes the Hamlet a classic tragedy. In the final act, both the hero and the audience are more perceptive and aware of the looming death of the hero.

The Hamlet is a classic example of a tragedy. The events that take place in the play make fit in Aristotle’s description of a tragedy. Even at the start of the play, the protagonist seems to be having a flaw in his character that makes him to fail in making decisive actions. This flaw causes him to get involved in circumstances that neither he nor the audience can control. At the end of the play, the hero dies but not before experiencing awareness that he is just about to die. This awareness and perception is also present on the audience. This scene fits the description of a classic tragedy as outlined by Aristotle. Therefore, this should leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that Hamlet is a tragedy.

Recently feminists’ critics have examined and attempted to reintegrate the often-scorned characters of Gertrude and Ophelia while psychoanalytic critics have evaluated Hamlets’ unconscious desires. The play topped the performance list of the Royal Shakespeare Company and its forerunners in Stratford upon Avon since 1879.

Revenge tragedy.

Audiences watching Hamlet at the time it was first performed would recognize the play as belonging to a particular genre: they didn’t have a name for it, but modern scholars call it “revenge tragedy.” In a revenge tragedy the hero has suffered a great wrong, usually the murder of someone he loves, and the plot is driven by his desire for revenge. At the end of the play, the hero murders the person who has wronged him, and typically the hero also dies. The first really popular revenge tragedy was The Spanish Tragedy  by Thomas Kyd. It was written more than a decade before Hamlet , and it was still being performed when Hamlet was first staged. Shakespeare’s audiences would have noticed that Hamlet borrows several features from Kyd’s play, including a vengeful ghost, a play-within-a-play and a hero who goes mad. But rather than simply repeating the familiar conventions of the revenge tragedy, Hamlet subverts many of the tropes to question both the genre of revenge tragedy, as well as the nature of revenge itself.

Hamlet turns revenge tragedy on its head by taking away the usual obstacles to the hero’s vengeance. In a typical revenge tragedy like The Spanish Tragedy , the hero faces two obstacles: to find out who the murderers are, and then to get himself into a position where he can kill them. In Hamlet , the hero learns the identity of his father’s murderer at the end of Act I, and he’s in a position to kill Claudius from the very beginning. No character thwarts him in his desire for revenge, and, living in the same palace as his nemesis, he has many chances to enact his plot. Hamlet’s only real obstacle is in his head: he is uncertain what he should believe and how he should act. By making the obstacles to Hamlet’s revenge internal, Shakespeare introduces philosophical questions to the revenge tragedy which had not appeared in the genre before. Can we believe the evidence of our eyes? Is revenge justified? Can we predict the consequences of our actions? What happens when we die?

While Hamlet , being a tragedy, is generally seen as a very serious play, in some ways it seems to make fun of the revenge tragedies that came before it. When Hamlet cries “Remorseless, treacherous, lecherous, kindless Villain! / O, vengeance!” (II.ii.) he sounds like a sillier version of Hieronimo, the hero of The Spanish Tragedy . The play-within-a-play staged in Act III, Scene 2 is a parody of a revenge tragedy: its rhymes would have made it sound absurdly old-fashioned to an audience in Shakespeare’s time. With the character of Laertes, Shakespeare pokes fun at the traditional heroes of revenge tragedy. Unlike Hamlet, Laertes is ready to rush to his revenge, but Claudius is easily able to manipulate him and Laertes ends up begging forgiveness from the man he wanted to murder. By making traditional revenge tragedies look ridiculous, Shakespeare shows us that the troubling philosophical doubt of Hamlet is more realistic than the passion and fury of plays like The Spanish Tragedy.

After Hamlet , the genre of revenge tragedy would never be taken entirely seriously again. Later revenge tragedies follow Hamlet in using humor, especially humor at the expense of the revenge tragedy genre itself. The best-known revenge tragedy written after Hamlet is The Revenger’s Tragedy , by Thomas Middleton, which was first performed in 1606. Despite its title, The Revenger’s Tragedy is as much a black comedy as a revenge tragedy. Its violence is deliberately over-the-top and its plot absurdly complicated. Middleton was also influenced by Hamlet ’s philosophical questions. Where Hamlet doubted the morality of seeking revenge, Middleton’s hero Vindice is openly immoral in pursuing his: by the end of the play Vindice is more a villain than a hero. Modern action movies also owe a great deal to Hamlet ’s comic take on the revenge plot. Movies like Kill Bill and John Wick share with Hamlet and The Revenger’s Tragedy amoral heroes and complex revenge plots ending in comically gory action sequences.

Shakespeare wrote the play so Hamlet would be very dynamic, so he shows an array of good and bad characteristics throughout the play. When he is first brought into the story in Act I- Scene 2, you see Hamlet being a nice, sensitive young prince who is grieving the death of his father, who was King. The Revenge and Tragedy in the Story of Hamlet

The story of Hamlet comes from a long line of revenge tragedies in which a character attempts to avenge the murder of a family member. Just as revenge is present in literature, it is also present in todays society. It is always there, lurking in the darkness of the human mind, watching. waiting for an opportunity to lash out at the surrounding world. Shakespeare suggests in Hamlet that revenge is a debilitating force, and the pursuit of it can infect the most noble of all souls. Once tainted by this infectious disease, no weak minded individual can be cured of it. Revenge is an unavoidable power moving the mind closer towards destruction.

In order for revenge to truly corrupt Hamlet, he had to be an innocent and noble character from the onset of the play. Without this innocence and respected status, Hamlet would have nothing to lose, revenge would have no affect on him because the evil would already exist. There has to be a shift from good to evil in order for Hamlet to be a tragedy, and it is the darkness of revenge that provides this shift. It is from Ophelia that a reader gets their description of Hamlets character before it was corrupted. She reveals everything about Hamlet that would make him a noble man. It is in their first meeting in the play, that Ophelia states, O, what a noble mind is here oer-thrown!

The courtiers, soldiers, scholars, eye, tongue, sword; th expectancy and rose of the fair state, the glass of fashion and the mould of form, th observd of all observers (III.1.142-146). First of all, she herself states that he has a noble mind. Then Ophelia comments on how he can relate to everyone in some small way. This ability makes Hamlet the pride of Denmark, and the most loved. He is also considered to be a model for all men, thus meaning that people admire him and look to him for guidance. One can base the entire notion of Hamlets nobility on this one quote. What else does a person need in order to be considered noble? He is admired, he is loved, and he is a role model, thus Hamlet is noble.

The nobility of Hamlet was corrupted by the power of revenge. Hamlet, although saddened by his fathers death and the marriage of Claudius and Gertrude, was not consumed by it. These were in no way the sources of his diseased soul, rather it was the desire for murderous revenge that slowly turned his heart black. The deterioration of his righteous mind began when he first learned of his fathers foul murder and and vows swift revenge.

Hold, hold, my heart; and you, my sinews, grow not instant old, but bear me stiffly up (Shakespeare I.v.93-94). Hamlet not only vows revenge, but he hands his mind, soul, and everything he holds dear over to it. He is no longer loyal to his father, but to revenge alone. It is at this exact moment that Hamlet and all his actions become truly dark; revenge has begun to consume him.

The destructive force that revenge possesses comes from its consummation. Once an individual stands in the light of revenge, there is no turning back; revenge is unavoidable. It is impossible to commit a crime or ponder the thought and not be affected by it in some way. Hamlet can try and justify his cause with the belief, An eye for an eye, but it is no use. Murdering his uncle is not his decision nor his duty. There is no such thing as an appropriate sin, or sinning elegantly.

All sins are immoral no matter what the intention. Hamlet is too intent on the damning of Claudius soul. Then trip him, that his heels may kick at heaven, and that his sould may be as damnd and black as hell, whereto it goes (Shakespeare III.iii. 93-95). Just because Hamlets father was murdered does not mean that he has the right to murder Claudius, much less damn him in the process. It is Hamlets decision to damn Claudius, that exposes the ultimate degredation and destruction that revenge has brought upon Hamlets soul.

Revenge is negative, but the affects that revenge produces can be far worse. In the case of Hamlet, the results were catastrophic. The first victim was the unsuspecting Polonius. The death of Polonius and young Hamlets desire for insatiable need for revenge sparked a chain reaction that soon engulfed everything and everyone around the young prince. Hamlets relentless pursuit not only caused the death of many people, it triggered the downfall of an entire kingdom.

Hamlet warns that revenge is a force not meant to be tampered with. The struggle to achieve revenge, will not relieve a person of pain, it will only cause more. In writing Hamlet, Shakespeare demonstrates that revenge is not the answer, and that it in the end solves nothing. By doing this, Shakespeare leaves the audience with the moral dilema of how to live there own lives. If the path that Hamlet chose was unfulfilled, then what path is the audience supposed to take? Forgiveness. The act of forgiveness is the only path to true happiness and salvation, not only because it spares the soul of the individual affected by the crime, but also because it delivers the offender from eternal damnation.

Hamlet Analyzed According To Aristotle’s Six Elements Of Tragedy Aristotle’s Poetics is considered the guide to a well written tragedy; his methods have been used for centuries.

In this guide, he sets out the six elements that compose a great tragedy. In Aristotle’s opinion, plot is the most important aspect of the tragedy. All other parts such as character, diction, and thought stem from the plot. Aristotle defines a tragedy as an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament. The ornaments are separate parts of the play in the form of action, not of narrative, and in the form of pity and fear effecting sympathy from the audience.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet follows this definition for the most part. The play centers around Hamlet’s quest to avenge his father’s death; this is a serious action. It is also complete in the sense that all the loose ends are tied together in a sensible, believable manner. Hamlet is able to avenge his father’s death by killing his uncle. Shakespeare also follows Aristotle’s idea of the tragedy being of a certain magnitude. The characters are supposed to be “perfect people”, but people whom the audience can relate to.

Hamlet is a wealthy prince, however he deals with the same problems as the common man. He is confused, paranoid, and angered about the circumstances surrounding his father’s death. He is also unsure of himself and how he should handle the situation. The audience can relate to this uncertain feeling and they are able to empathize with Hamlet. Aristotle believes that in order for a tragedy to be effective, it must convey pity and fear.

He defines pity as a feeling that is aroused by “unmerited misfortune. “The fear of impending evil is also prevalent in the play. As the plot progresses, it becomes clear that the king is plotting to kill Hamlet and Hamlet is planning to kill the king. Hamlet’s plot is what Aristotle considers complex.

Aristotle stresses that diction is important to make the tragedy believable. Shakespeare utilizes diction perfectly and everything his characters say is appropriate for them to be saying. For instance, the king speaks like a king, he always dodges like a true politician. There is an obvious and necessary difference between the way he speaks and the way the gravediggers speak.

The gravediggers are common men and therefore they speak like common men. There are some aspects of Aristotle’s Poetics that Shakespeare does not follow. For instance, Aristotle states that in a great tragedy, there should be unity of time, place, and action. By this he means the action of the play should take place in the amount of time it takes to perform it, it should occur in one setting, and there should be one main plot or action. Shakespeare breaks all these rules.

The play spans over a significant period of time. Also, the action occurs in various settings ranging from the palace to a plain in Denmark. Finally, there are several plots taking place simultaneously. For instance, as Hamlet is struggling with the death of his father, Ophelia is going insane because Hamlet is not returning her love or showing any interest in her.

The audience feels pity for Ophelia throughout her ordeal as well. Aristotle would not approve of all the subplots that occur within this play. Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a great and effective tragedy which follows most of the guidelines set by Aristotle in Aristotle’s Poetics. There are some aspects that Shakespeare does not follow; however the play still effects the audience in the desired manner. In reality, Hamlet would not have the same impact if it followed all the guidelines.

For instance, the whole aspect of the subplot about Ophelia’s insanity adds much to the play. Shakespeare broke some of Aristotle’s rules, but still wrote an effective tragedy that has been appreciated by audiences for centuries.

The Tragedy of Hamlet is probably one of the most discussed works that were ever written by Shakespeare. The play reflects the life of Hamlet; a king who guided by revenge also dies in the process. But Hamlet does not merely decide to wake up one day and revenge for his slain father. He is indecisive and hesitant, but he sometimes overthinks and gets things out of hand. When the ghost of his father appears to him, he decides to kill his uncle Claudius who is the King of Denmark. The Tragedy of Hamlet is a play that concentrates largely on the detrimental effects of taking revenge to showcase that it is wrong and immoral.

Shakespeare starts the play by modeling Hamlet, a character who is at the crossroads of decision-making. At the start of the play, Shakespeare places Hamlet as a victim of circumstances. Circumstances have made him look into how his father died. In the very first instances, he can merely make a decision. Hamlet is a moral man at the start, and he does not believe in revenge. When he first questions the death of his father, hastily king Claudius replies and asks him to stop thinking about the circumstances in which he lost his father because it is common to lose parents, but it should not be the basis of stubbornness (Haque 56). At the same time, his mother asks him to stay still about it, and he obliges to obey her. Therefore, Hamlet is in a dilemma. He does not know what to do after having lost his father in very unclear ways. However, everyone compels him to maintain his morality, which he agrees to.

Though he agrees to keep silent about the matter and stop overthinking about it, Hamlet cannot find rest. He questions the death of his father, even to God. At one instance, he cries, saying, "How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable, Seem to me all the uses of this world!" (Shakespeare 15) Hamlet laments over the death of his father, who he believes did not die fairly. As the son of the slain king, Hamlet is justified to question how his father died. He is justified because he knows that it was not necessary for his father to die that way. Shakespeare presents it as moral to question the death of a loved one. Indeed, Hamlet was right because he needed to know what happened and under which circumstances his father died (Wilson 108). He had not displayed any action or inaction after he understood. Fate had only made him the son of the king, and thus as the one who should have inherited the throne after his father, it was moral for Hamlet to question the death of his father.

All through Hamlet had doubted that his uncle and the current King, Claudius had killed his father. The extension of injustice in society is hereby replicated. Shakespeare presents such an unexpected kind of dishonesty and betrayal. It was just not dishonesty for Claudius to have acted as if he was concerned about the death of the previous king, but it was also betrayal for him to act as if he was investigating the matter. Such an occurrence and knowledge of what had happened must have agitated Hamlet. Hamlet, therefore, becomes a victim of circumstances (Wilson 112). In as much as he learns that his uncle killed his father, it hurts him most to see that the same man that killed his father is the one that took his throne. Fate sets Hamlet in a very weak position where he has to be decisive. He is set at the bars between revenging for his father for his death and continuous abuse by his father. All this time, Shakespeare shows Hamlet as if in deep thought but not haunted as he had not done anything wrong.

The replication of a son whose father is killed is not easy to detach the essence of revenge. Especially in the consideration that Hamlet knows his father was a king, everyone would expect that he would revenge. Basing it on reality, no individual would be comfortable with living with a member of the family who has killed their father. Based on such an outlook, Hamlet appears to be quite a sensible person. He is left in between taking action and keeping his calm. Indeed, to many readers, Hamlet seems indecisive. He feels the urge to pursue the man who killed his father, but at the same time, he does not want to be possessed of the same evils (Zysk 425). Therefore stricken between the two thoughts, Hamlet is a disturbed man. Shakespeare puts Hamlet in such an environment to train his readers that taking a decision in such times is paramount. It determines the next action one takes and definitely their life in the future as it did for the case of Hamlet.

Shakespeare in the play showcases revenge as a cycle that is not easy to break. Hamlet, for instance, would not have conducted revenge had it not been that the ghost of his father had appeared to him and asked him to revenge for his death. When the ghost of Hamlet's father appears to him, it tells him, "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder." (Shakespeare 28) Therefore, a vivid transfer of revenge is seen to transfer from a fallen father to a son. The evident transfer represents a cycle that could be hard to break. Therefore, when a person seeks revenge, they tend to bring in others into action, which makes it hard for people who were not interested in the process. Definitely, after revenging for his father, Hamlet was assured that there would be consequences that would follow him, and others would also strive to kill him. Therefore, in a very fundamental way, Shakespeare argues against revenge, seeing that it develops into a cycle.

Though Hamlet weighs the need for revenge, he does not come into the full realization that it is wrong, and it makes him others who he does not intend. In different instances, Hamlet thinks that it is not just for him to kill a man, regardless of what he had done to him. At the same time, he believes that killing King Claudius would relieve his stresses and make him feel relieved. For this reason, Hamlet starts looking for every chance that he would have to kill Claudius. At one instance, he hears Gertrude crying, and Polonius yells right behind her (Mosley 4). Thinking that it is Claudius who is behind the tapestry, Hamlet thrusts his sword only to realize that he has killed Polonius. He feels sorry for killing Polonius as it was not his wish. Using this example, Shakespeare shows how revenge may make others to be susceptible, proving that it is not a decent idea.

The effect of the change due to revenge on a man can be seen when Hamlet looks for Claudius and kills him ruthlessly. After Hamlet kills Polonius, one would expect that he would feel sorry for his action and would quit his revenge (Kadhim and Mahmoud 3). However, he instead becomes more ruthless and obsessed with human blood. When hamlet thinks it is the most opportune moment. He is very ruthless and tries to induce that he wants to kill Claudius because he wants to send him to a heavenly afterlife. In his soliloquy, Hamlet says,

And now I'll do't. And so 'a goes to heaven; And so I am revenged. That would be scanned: A villain kills my father, and for that I, his sole son

Do this same villain to heaven. (83)

When Hamlet finally decides to kill Claudius, he slits his neck and then forces him to drink from a poisoned cup. It is such a ruthless killing because he does not want to waste a chance and would not be prepared to see him recovering (Zysk 424). The feeling for revenge has, therefore turned calm like Hamlet to a ruthless person which is a lesson on why revenge is unacceptable in society.

But the string of revenge does not end with the death of Claudius. Before killing Claudius, Hamlet had mistaken him for Polonius. Leartes, the son of Polonius, could never rest after Hamlet had killed his father (Mosley 4). As Hamlet kills Claudius, Leartes appears with a poisoned sword and finds it the most opportune moment to kill Hamlet. The poisoned sword finds Hamlet much unprepared . While Hamlet would have thought that he would have lived a settled life having killed Claudius, he implicates himself into a difficult situation as the son of Polonius also seeks to avenge for his father. A quick succession of instances of revenge can be seen to emanate here, and probably, Leartes does not have a settled life after that. By the death of Hamlet, Shakespeare is successful in showing that revenge is not an option because it also kills the perpetrator. The death of Hamlet brings such a shock to the reader as it is quite unexpected.

Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet presents a rather uncommon idea of revenge that proves it is not good and moral for society. Revenge in the play is fuelled by the death of the father of Hamlet, who is killed by Claudius due to his thirst for leadership. After Hamlet learns about the death of his father, he plans to attach him, but he is undecided. However, when the ghost of his father appears to him, Hamlet feels moved to instill the revenge. Shakespeare presents that revenge turns moral men into inconsiderate people who often kill without remorse. Hamlet kills not just Claudius but also Polonius, who he mistakes as Claudius. His life is also not spared as he is killed by Leartes the son to Polonius. In the end, it emanates that revenge causes such a great level of destabilization in society. It causes the deaths of leaders and family men leaving their loved ones and followers in agony. Based on the examples he relays in the play, it is evident that Shakespeare's primary goal is to argue against revenge.
