Graduating with Honors from MAE
Three honors distinctions are available at the University of Florida:
- cum laude (with honors)
- magna cum laude (with high honors)
- summa cum laude (with highest honors)
Each college/school/department has its own standards for graduating with honors. For the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, the requirements for the three graduation honors designations are as follow:
- Cum Laude: 3.3 GPA in all upper-division courses
- Magna Cum Laude: 3.5 GPA in all upper-division courses and completion of a Honors Thesis
- Summa Cum Laude: 3.8 GPA in all upper-division courses and completion of a Honors Thesis
The upper division GPA is based on all courses taken at UF after you become a 3-EG (i.e. after 60 hours).
Honors Thesis
An undergraduate Honors Thesis is completed in order to graduate magna cum laude or summa cum laude. Students interested in completing an Honors Thesis should follow these steps:
- Identify an MAE professor to serve as your Honors Thesis Advisor and Chair. This must be an MAE faculty member.
- Work with your Honors Thesis Advisor to form a 3-person supervisory committee comprised of your Chair (Honors Thesis Advisor), an MAE faculty member, and a faculty member external to the MAE department.
- Make a formal oral presentation of your results to your supervisory committee. You must submit the final oral exam forms to Mr. Michael Fitzgerald, Academic Advisor, at our email address [email protected] .
The Honors Thesis normally takes two semesters to complete. Students may be enrolled in up to 6 credit hours of research (EGN4912) to earn academic credit while working on their Honors Thesis. This is not required, but if you would like to be enrolled, this can be done by emailing the completed research application to [email protected] . The application must be signed by the faculty member and student to be enrolled in the course. Research credit counts as a technical elective toward the degree. While the Honors Thesis may contain work with a design emphasis, students are not allowed to submit work done primarily as a part of a senior design course(s) to count as their Honors Thesis.

Graduating with honors
March 25, 2022 in
The requirement for “magna cum laude” or “summa cum laude” involves a thesis, research project or some other approved body of creative work, which is submitted for evaluation according to the rules of the Honors Office, the College, and the student’s major department. The appropriate departmental faculty committee decides whether a project warrants a magna cum laude or summa cum laude designation. The requirement for “cum laude” is based on only grade point average.
The Honors Program Office has the responsibility for maintaining a database for all thesis, research project reports, or creative works that are submitted for magna cum laude or summa cum laude designations. Although students are responsible for knowing the requirements for the various honors designations, departments should undertake to remind eligible students. For those students seeking magna cum laude or summa cum laude honors, the department is asked to inform students of their responsibility to submit abstracts, necessary forms, and copies of their thesis to the student’s major department student records office. The departmental staff will then submit forms to the College Dean’s office on or before the deadline.
POSTBACCALAUREATE students are not eligible to receive any type of honors recognition; however, exceptions to this policy are allowed. To request an exception to this policy, the student should contact their department requesting an exception in writing. The department will, if they support the student’s request to graduate with an honors designation, submit a letter of exception addressed to Dr. Kevin Knudson to Engineering Student Affairs (Adrienne L. Cook, 204A Weil Hall). The letter should be signed by the department chair or authorized designee and should have a signature line for the Associate Dean of Engineering Student Affairs. This letter should be submitted no later than the same day departments submit the preliminary degree certification online. (For this date please refer to the Critical Dates calendar at http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog/adhub.html . ) The Engineering Student Affairs office will submit the letter of exception to the Honors Office. Deadline information can be obtained from the department office.

An Honors thesis is a written report of a creative, scholarly project dealing with teaching, research, or outreach. It has clear objectives and conclusions and involves original, independent work of the student. It is NOT a book report or literature review of a topic, an opinion paper on why something is good or bad, or a paper that lacks novel and critical analysis.
There is no length requirement; typically theses are 10-50 pages double spaced, not counting figures, tables, literature cited, and appendices. The focus is quality , not quantity.

Graduate with Honors

To graduate with honors, you must earn a specified GPA in all three of the following areas:
- overall UF GPA,
- business core GPA, and
- major or area of specialization GPA (see table)
In addition, students who wish to graduate magna and summa cum laude must write an honors thesis (see below for thesis guidelines). Tip: Your honors thesis can also serve as a University Scholars Program research project!
Thesis Requirements
Information systems and operations management (bsba-ist).
To graduate with the magna or summa cum laude honors designation, students must conduct an empirical research project (e.g., an observational study, survey, or experiment) that is commensurate with the standards in their field and then report their findings in a formal research paper. There are countless research topics to choose from and students are encouraged to explore their interests. It is also possible to take part in a faculty member’s research project and to use that project as a basis for your honors thesis. In general, an honors thesis must be supervised by a faculty member who has an understanding of the subject you plan to research. Find a faculty supervisor for your project.
In addition to securing a faculty advisor, students must obtain departmental approval for their project from the ISOM department in 351 Stuzin Hall via the Heavener School of Business Undergraduate Honors Thesis Application . If your project is approved, the department’s Honors Coordinator will register you for QMB 4970 which is a one credit honors thesis course that is taken for a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grade. You are expected to enroll in this course by the end of the drop/add period. The faculty supervisor is responsible for determining if your thesis is satisfactory and for notifying the Honors Coordinator of your final grade. The Honors Coordinator will submit your final grade to the university.

Finance (BSBA-FIN)
To graduate with the magna or summa cum laude honors designation, students must conduct an empirical research project (e.g., an observational study, survey, or experiment) that is commensurate with the standards in their field and then report their findings in a formal research paper. There are countless research topics to choose from; however, very few Internet-related topics will be approved. Students are encouraged to explore their own interests, or to take part in a faculty member’s research project and to use that project as a basis for an honors thesis. In general, an honors thesis must be supervised by a faculty member who has an understanding of the subject you plan to research. Faculty supervisors can oversee no more than two honors theses each semester, so pre-planning is essential. Find a faculty supervisor for your project.
In addition to securing a faculty advisor, students must obtain departmental approval for their project from the FIRE department in 321 Stuzin Hall via the Heavener School of Business Undergraduate Honors Thesis Application . If your project is approved, the FIRE department will give you permission to register for FIN 4970 which is a one credit honors thesis course that is taken for a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grade. You are expected to enroll in this course by the end of the drop/add period. The faculty supervisor is responsible for determining if your thesis is satisfactory and for submitting your final grade.

There are countless research topics to choose from and students are encouraged to explore their interests. It is also possible to take part in a faculty member’s research project and to use that project as a basis for your honors thesis. In general, an honors thesis must be supervised by a faculty member who has an understanding of the subject you plan to research; students who plan to conduct research in their area of specialization should work with a faculty member from the department that oversees the area of specialization. Students who research a business-related topic should find a business faculty advisor and follow the honors thesis guidelines established by their advisor’s department. Find a faculty supervisor for your project.
Students should have their faculty supervisor email the Honors Coordinator to indicate they have agreed to supervise the thesis. In addition, students must obtain the approval of the Honors Coordinator for their project via the Heavener School of Business Undergraduate Honors Thesis Application . If approved, the Honors Coordinator will enroll you in GEB 4970 which is a one credit honors thesis course that is taken for a Satisfactory(S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grade.
