Specific objectives for the program are to:

• Produce transformational sport science research and coach education/research;
• Produce pioneering research applied to coaching;
• Provide a background of knowledge of sport physiology that translates into quality coaching;
• Advocate for using a scientific approach to address issues surrounding athletics performance;
• Emphasize that a coach's primary responsibilities are for athletes' well-being and achievement, becoming the best that he or she can be;
• Reorganize perceptions to understand that research is a part of coaching; and
• Elevate the academic status of coaches in the educated community.

IMPACT:   This Ph.D. program is ground-breaking and distinctive in the US and will impact education and research for two professions:  sport scientists and coaches.   ETSU expects that this program will contribute to national interest and awareness of the need to academically educate sport scientists and coaches and to target athletic performance rather than participation .  This single refocus is expected to lower the incident of sport injuries and increase levels of performance achievement for athletes, thereby supporting sport through research and education. 

The doctoral program is integrated with the ETSU Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education (CESSCE).  The students will have the opportunity to be involved in clinics for coaches, continuing education programs, and activities that permeate the sports community, from the elite athlete to the grade-school child who participates in school or recreational sports.  Objectives of the CESSCE include improvement of athlete performance as well as how to better understand the role of sport and sport performance in the health and well being of the nation as a whole and the impact of disability, injury and disease on sport participation and performance.   The specialized research possibilities could easily yield findings that would impact quality of life of athletes and the general public.

CURRICULUM: The program requires a minimum of 72 semester hours, distributed as follows:

Concentrations(s) and Associated Electives:  There are two concentrations:  Sport Physiology and Sport Performance.

• The Sport Physiology concentration has 15 required semester credit hours and a minimum of 9 credit hours of guided electives . 
• The Sport Performance concentration has 15 required semester credit hours and a minimum of 9 credit hours of guided electives .

Sport physiology is concerned primarily with how underlying mechanisms can be manipulated by variations in training to produce specific performance enhancements.  For example, testosterone (an anabolic hormone) and cortisol (a catabolic hormone) are known to impact physiological variables such as lean body mass and body composition, strength, explosiveness, and psychological variables such as arousal.  A student may investigate the effects of manipulating training variables (e.g., volume of work and intensity of work) so that the T:C ratio is maximized at appropriate time, such as a conference or national championship. 

Sport performance is concerned primarily with ways in which individuals and teams can enhance competitive performance that may include nutrition, technique analysis, sport psychology, strength and conditioning training, and long-term athlete monitoring.  For example, a student in the Sport Performance concentration might investigate the acute and chronic effects of whole body vibration on the flexibility and competitive performance of elite gymnasts.

Dissertation

The focus of a dissertation for the Ph.D. in Sport Physiology and Performance depends on the concentration: Sport Physiology or Sport Performance. Students in both concentrations use knowledge of physiology and research to better understand and enhance sport performance. However, students in the Sport Physiology concentration focus on translational research concerning how alterations in physiology impact sport performance, whereas the students in the Sport Performance concentration studies primarily how to maximally enhance performance using a research-based approach.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants, including international students, seeking admission to the Ph.D. in Sport Physiology and Performance degree program must fulfill all the requirements for admission to the ETSU School of Graduate Studies and adhere to other school processes, procedures, and requirements as delineated in the catalog. Presented in the Table PS1 are the School of Graduate Studies admission requirements and the additional requirements for the Ph.D. in Sport Physiology and Performance program. Program Admission Requirements Admission to the Ph.D. degree program in Sport Physiology and Performance is competitive and based on scholarship, letters of recommendation, and evidence of potential success. Students seeking admission to the program must meet the general admission requirements of the Graduate School. In addition, the following specific admissions criteria apply:

• Vita or resume
• Personal essay detailing career and educational goals and potential area of interest for the dissertation.
• Official scores on the general test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  Preferred scores are above the 50% percentile for verbal and quantitative sections.
• Four letters of recommendation from individuals who can address the applicants academic and professional achievements.  At least two recommendations must be from former college instructors.
• Masters degree (thesis preferred) or bachelors degree (strong research component) in Biology, Exercise Science, or related discipline from an accredited university with an overall GPA of 3.4 for applicants with a masters degree or 3.0 for applicants with a bachelors degree on a 4.0 scale. It is recommended that entering students have an undergraduate background in statistics, general chemistry, general biology, human anatomy and physiology. Students admitted with a B.S. or M.S. degree are expected to meet all doctoral requirements, including course prerequisites or equivalencies.* Thus, the program of study for a student entering with a B.S. degree will exceed the 72 credit hour minimum and extend the program of study.
• A personal or phone interview with members of the admission committee. Factors to be considered in the interview include academic success, evidence of leadership skills, writing skills, computer skills, and oral communication skills.

*Course prerequisites or equivalencies needed for the Ph.D. in Sport Physiology and Performance are:

• PEXS 3610 Exercise Physiology I,
• PEXS 4620 Exercise Physiology II,
• PEXS 5655 Sports Nutrition and Ergogenic Aids
• PEXS 5670 Research Design and Analysis.

Once all pertinent application materials are complete, the School of Graduate Studies forwards the application package to the program. Applications are not evaluated until all materials have been received. The program admissions committee reviews the materials, interviews the student, and completes an overall evaluation of the applicants ability to complete advanced study. Recommendations regarding admissions to the program are made to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies who makes final decisions on admissions. The program can recommend conditional admission to promising applicants not meeting minimum requirements for GPA and prerequisites.

For students seeking a funded doctoral fellowship, completed applications should be submitted by February 15 for competitive review.  The program decisions for financial support are usually made in March or April.  Students not seeking funding need to apply by June 1 for admission for the fall semester.  Applications can be made electronically via the Web at http://goldlink.etsu.edu .

The doctoral program is firmly based in research and prepares students for academic careers in exercise physiology. Graduate students in this program have numerous applied physiological research opportunities in the program’s well-equipped laboratories of clinical and applied physiology, neuromuscular research and active aging, and sports medicine and motion analysis. Additionally, there are numerous collaborative research opportunities bolstered by the department’s strong relationships with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, College of Arts and Sciences, Health South Doctors’ Hospital, and the Varsity Athletics Department. The program is best known for its work in women’s health, obesity, pediatric physiology, aging, muscle, biomechanics, cardiovascular physiology, exercise biochemistry, and human metabolism. The Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology requires the completion of up 72 credit hours, depending on the student’s academic background, and takes approximately four to five years to complete.

Admission Requirements

• M.A. or M.S. in exercise physiology or a related field.
• Pre-requisite courses including one year of chemistry with laboratory, and one course each in human biology, human physiology, and exercise physiology.
• Admission preference will be given to those that have completed courses in organic chemistry and biochemistry.
• Minimum 3.0 undergraduate and graduate GPA and a minimum 300 GRE score (verbal + quantitative) and 4.0 Analytical Writing Assessment score.

Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology, -->PhD -->

The PhD program in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology at WVU is recognized as one of the premier training programs in the world.

It provides students with a comprehensive curriculum delivered by highly qualified faculty. The program combines academic rigor, extensive research experiences and applied consulting opportunities to train highly competent, well-rounded future sport, exercise and performance psychology professionals.

Students initiate their own line of research, work with faculty to produce publishable manuscripts, and complete three research benchmarks in addition to their dissertation. Furthermore, students take part in supervised applied experiences working within a range of different sport, exercise and performance settings, including Division I, II and III athletic programs.

This PhD program, which includes a concurrent master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling , allows individuals to sit for counseling licensure upon graduation. With this combination of research and applied aspects of sport, exercise and performance psychology, the program prepares students for careers as sport psychology consultants, researchers and future faculty members. Students may also apply for a science track with more emphasis on research, which does not include the master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Many students work 20 hours a week during the semester as a graduate assistant, either teaching, providing service or conducting research. In return for these contributions, graduate assistants receive a tuition waiver and stipend.

This program is delivered in-person and requires full-time residency in Morgantown for the majority of the 3-4 year program.

Your Degree Plan

The PhD program in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology combines academic rigor, extensive research experiences and applied consulting opportunities to train highly competent, well-rounded sport, exercise and performance psychology professionals.

• Plan of Study

The program combines academic rigor, extensive research experiences and applied consulting opportunities to train highly competent, well-rounded future sport, exercise and performance psychology professionals. The comprehensive curriculum represents the science-practice model of psychology.

Foundational Courses Students complete 65-75 credit hours that cover traditional SEP coursework, professional practice courses and research methods. They will have individual plan of studies meetings to finalize their doctoral curriculum with all courses needed to complete the requirements for the SEP doctoral degree.

Dissertation Throughout the program students select a line of research that coincides with their area of interest. The SEP doctoral degree program culminates with a dissertation research project, exploring an important topic in the field of sport, exercise and performance psychology. The dissertation will be in the form of two or three publishable papers researching the chosen topic, which will be presented in a public forum. The dissertation committee must approve of the dissertation to be fully accepted.

Earn a Dual Degree in Counseling Once admitted into this program, students can opt to dual enroll in the master's degree program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling . Courses for these two programs are completed simultaneously. Upon completion students are eligible to sit for licensure as a licensed professional counselor in most states.

Research and Academic Opportunities

Applied Experiences Students have the opportunity to gain applied experience working with a range of performers, including student-athletes of Division I, II and III athletic programs. As a result, most students accrue more than 400 hours of supervised service provision allowing them to meet the requirements for AASP certification (CMPC). In addition, the dual enrollment in a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling allows individuals to sit for counseling licensure upon graduation.

Research The program boasts seven faculty members trained in sport, exercise and performance psychology. These faculty members have different training backgrounds and research specialties (see faculty profiles) allowing them to supervise students with various research interests. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with those faculty members and are expected to produce publishable manuscripts. In their research, students are encouraged to identify topics that align with their own interests and will help them reach their professional goals.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission into a graduate program at WVU an applicant must submit official, bachelor's degree transcripts from a regionally accredited institution and hold a GPA of at least 2.75. WVU operates decentralized admissions. Decentralized admissions allows each graduate program to set its own application requirements in addition to the University requirements.

To be eligible for admission into the Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology graduate program an applicant must submit the following documentation:

Applicants can seek admission to the doctoral program in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology with either a baccalaureate degree or master's degree. To be considered for admission, applicants must upload the following documentation within the graduate application :

• Résumé or CV
• Transcripts from all previous institutions
• Official GRE scores
• Personal statement (1-2 written pages on professional background, goals and reasons for pursuing doctoral degree at WVU, and rationale for potential faculty advisor)
• Two (2) Letters of recommendation

You will not be able to submit your application until the above documents are uploaded. Once the application is submitted and (unofficial/official) transcripts are received, your application will be reviewed for an admission decision. International applicants will not be reviewed with unofficial transcripts.

Prospective students should NOT apply to the dual master's program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at this time. If accepted into the PhD program, admission fees will be waived.

Admissions Deadlines

Fall Admissions: Feb. 1 to be given priority screening for fall admission of that year.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must apply to the Graduate School at the University of Northern Colorado before the program area reviews the applicant’s request for admission. Failure to submit all required materials will delay the evaluation and screening of your application.

Each applicant must:

• Possess a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university or a comparable degree from a foreign institution.

Have a cumulative  GPA of 3.00 or better (on a 4.00 scale) for the most recent degree earned or current degree in progress.

If you are still completing your master's degree at the time you apply, admission will be based on your current cumulative GPA, and you will need to re-submit your official transcript (showing your conferred degree and final GPA) during your first semester. If your final GPA fell below 3.00,  you will be given additional   requirement s as defined by the academic program that must be met within one calendar year to remain enrolled at UNC.

Take the following steps to be considered for admission:

Step 1: Complete the Application

Complete the  online application .

• Answer the application questions.
• Request three (3) academic or professional letters of recommendation from those who can attest to your academic potential and abilities. You will be asked to supply information for your recommenders in the application.
• Domestic Students: $50 non-refundable application fee
• International Students: $50 non-refundable application fee

Once you submit your application you will be assigned  a n Admissions  Portal , allowing you to upload supplemental items, as listed below, and track your application through the admissions process.

Step 2: Request Transcripts

Request one official transcript from any regionally accredited college or university where a bachelor’s degree or higher was earned or is in progress (if you have earned multiple degrees, bachelor’s level or higher, an official transcript is required from each college or university where a degree was conferred). If you received a degree from UNC, you do not need to request a transcript from UNC. The Office of Admissions reserves the right to request that applicants provide official transcripts from other colleges or universities as needed. Applicants who have earned or are directly pursuing a higher degree from a  regionally accredited institution without receiving a bachelor’s degree (e.g., PharmD) may be eligible to apply to the Graduate School without the conferral of a bachelor’s degree.  Exceptions : If an applicant intends to use Veteran’s Education Benefits, an official transcript from all colleges or universities  attended  will be required in order to maintain compliance with Veteran’s Affairs policies.

Official transcripts from U.S. institutions should be sent via mail directly from the educational institution in an unopened, sealed envelope or through an electronically secure digital program from the issuing institution. Mailed transcripts should be sent to:

The Office of Admissions does not accept email, scanned or PDF transcripts directly from applicants. All official transcripts, submitted as part of the application process, are retained by UNC and not returned to applicants or admitted students.

UNC retains submitted transcripts, from institutions other than UNC, for admitted students for up to five years after graduation or date of last attendance at UNC. Transcripts provided by applicants who were not admitted, denied admissions or did not complete their application are destroyed after one (1) year. The  Office of   Admissions will make every attempt to use previously submitted transcripts if they are within these timeframes. However, if the  Office of   Admissions  cannot locate previously submitted transcripts, the transcripts fall outside the timeframes listed above or they are considered illegible, applicants must provide new transcripts. Applicants with academic credentials from outside the U.S. will need to follow the   requirements for submission of foreign transcripts . Step 3: Optional GRE Scores

You may choose to submit official GRE scores (less than five years old). It is expected that most applicants will not provide GRE scores, but they are optional for those who feel that GRE scores will strengthen their application credentials. It is in no way required; applications without GRE scores will receive full review without disadvantage.

If you want to include GRE scores in your application, please follow these guidelines: Request to have GRE test scores sent electronically to UNC (UNC's institutional code is 4074).

Required minimum scores:

• 140 Quantitative;
• 146 Verbal Reasoning;
• Combined score of at least 297;
• Analytical Writing 3.5
• Please note, UNC does not accept GRE Subject Test scores.

Step 4: Supplemental Items

Log back into the Admissions Portal to submit the following:

• Current resume or curriculum vitae
• Applicants are required to provide an original academic writing sample related to the program discipline.
• Please indicate that you are applying to the SES: Physical Education and Physical Activity Leadership (PE PAL) Emphasis Ph.D. program in the first paragraph. Failure to do so could mean a rejection of your application.
• It is also important that the name(s) of any faculty member(s) you are interested in working with appear somewhere in your research statement. Our program is mentor-based so faculty members are instrumental in admissions decisions.

Once you apply to the UNC Graduate School and your application packet is complete, your application will be reviewed by the Graduate School and then sent to the faculty/program for an admission recommendation. The timing of the admission decision depends on each individual program’s deadline and review process.

Important: This degree plan is effective for those starting this degree program in fall 2023 through summer 2024. This degree plan will remain in effect for students who do not break enrollment or who do not change degree programs, concentrations, or cognates.

Once the student enters the Dissertation phase, he/she must maintain continuous enrollment (Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters) until all degree requirements are completed.

Any student who is not ready for enrollment in HSCI 990 Dissertation IV (0 c.h.) after completing HSCI 989 Dissertation III (5 c.h.) may be required, as determined by the student's dissertation chair, to repeat HSCI 989 Dissertation III (5 c.h.) until deemed ready for enrollment in HSCI 990 Dissertation IV (0 c.h.) .

• Complete 60 hours
• A maximum of 50% of a post-graduate and doctoral degree may be transferred if approved and allowable, including credit from an earned degree from Liberty University on the same academic level

The Ph.D. program provides students with the choice of a research focus in one of five areas:

• Interscholastic / Intercollegiate Athletic Administration
• Sport Marketing 
• Sport Leadership
• Youth Sport Development and Coaching
• Risk Management in Sport

The Program also requires a minor/supporting area where students, in concert with their advisor, may tailor their program of study to meet specific educational and employment objectives.

Students entering the program with a previous degree from a variety of disciplines other than sport administration such as physical education, business administration, journalism, marketing, economics or other relevant majors will be considered.

Entrance Requirements

Entrance information concerning admission and program requirements is provided in the University of New Mexico Graduate bulletin. In addition, the Department of Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences has developed a guide to be used by all department graduate students to ensure that all graduate requirements are satisfied at the appropriate times. The criteria for admission to the graduate programs in Sport Administration include the following:

• Master's degree for Ph.D. program.
• GPA in most recent degree of 3.0 or better.
• Official GRE or GMAT Scores.
• Three letters of recommendation.
• Letter of intent. This should consist of a written statement of career goals and area of interest in Sport Administration.
• A completed online application form including official transcripts from all previously attended institutions.
• Professional resume.
• Sample publication, thesis, or research proposal.

Graduate applications are now submitted online at unm.edu/apply . All required documents and transcripts are submitted through the online application.

Concentration in Sport Administration

• Minimum of 72 credit hours plus 18 dissertation hours.
• Appropriate Master's degree credits may be transferred in and applied toward the total minimum hours with approval from the committee of studies.
• After completion of coursework, a written and oral comprehensive exam is required.
• 24 credit hour minimum of classroom work beyond the master's to be taken in Sport Administration at UNM.
• Note:  Due to the program's reputation and the fact that very few institutions offer a doctoral degree in Sport Administration/Sport Management, we receive numerous applications each year. Consequently, the number of openings in our doctoral program is limited and admission is extremely competitive. Although the number of admissions varies, a relatively small number of applicants are accepted.

Our Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences PhD allows you to conduct research in one of the leading research departments in the country.

The School is able to meet your aspirations by offering research degrees across a wide range of areas from exercise science to sport coaching. We have expertise in both the natural and social sciences, and we run programmes in collaboration with colleagues in the Medical School and Physiotherapy, and with professional groups such as the Professional Golfers’ Association. Within the School there is a regular research seminar programme, in which expert speakers from other universities and institutions give talks on their own research. You also have opportunities to present your own research ideas and findings, and our postgraduates currently organise a seminar series to provide a forum for such presentations. You will also be encouraged to present your data at national and international conferences. In addition, each of our research groups runs internal seminars.

The School is one of the leading research departments in the country, as reflected by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, which ranked us in the UK top three for research.

We have a vibrant postgraduate community, with over 50 doctoral researchers currently registered. We provide a supportive environment, with plenty of opportunities for you to meet fellow researchers, both socially and to discuss and present your work.

As part of this, we aim to make ensure that you are as well prepared as possible from the start of your doctoral life. When you join us, you will attend an informal introduction to the School, which gives you the opportunity to meet our Director of Postgraduate Research and to learn your PhD. You will also elect your student representatives for the School consultative committee. Finally, welcome drinks will take place in the atrium; this starts with introductions to all members of the School and leads into the first social event of the year.

Training and skills development.

The School holds a number of introductory and welcome sessions for new doctoral researchers on School procedures, how to approach the PhD and teaching skills. As a doctoral researcher here you will have the opportunity to select from a wide range of skills training offered both within the School and by the University Graduate School. You participate in an annual development needs analysis and, as a result, have a structured training plan identifying which courses and activities will help you to meet these needs.

During your PhD you will have monthly review meetings with your supervisor as well as the opportunity to present you research plans and findings to other members of the school to receive feedback and advice.

Teaching Opportunities

Most postgraduate students will be invited to assist with undergraduate modules, by taking laboratory demonstrations, engaging in small group teaching (eg, seminars), and helping with assessment. Very occasionally, senior postgraduates may be invited to give a lecture. In all cases, you will be thoroughly prepared for the task.

The School in based in the largest custom-built Sport and Exercise facility in the UK, with state of the art research labs dedicated to exercise testing and sample analysis across the spectrum of sport and exercise sciences including: physiology, biochemistry, psychophysiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, motor skills, immunology, muscle mechanics and the neurophysiology of movement. Our Standard Requirements

Entrance to the PhD requires at least an upper-second class degree, while MPhil registration requires a relevant first degree and evidence of ability to undertake research.

International Requirements

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a GPA of 14/20 from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of the Licenciado or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Argentinian university, with a promedio of at least 7.5, may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Applicants for PhD degrees will normally have a Maestria or equivalent

Applicants who hold a Masters degree will be considered for admission to PhD study.

Holders of a good four-year Diplomstudium/Magister or a Masters degree from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 2.5 will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students with a good 5-year Specialist Diploma or 4-year Bachelor degree from a recognised higher education institution in Azerbaijan, with a minimum GPA of 4/5 or 80% will be considered for entry to postgraduate taught programmes at the University of Birmingham.

For postgraduate research programmes applicants should have a good 5-year Specialist Diploma (completed after 1991), with a minimum grade point average of 4/5 or 80%, from a recognised higher education institution or a Masters or “Magistr Diplomu” or “Kandidat Nauk” from a recognised higher education institution in Azerbaijan.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 75% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with a CGPA of 3.0-3.3/4.0 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Students who hold a Masters degree from the University of Botswana with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0 (70%/B/'very good') will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Please note 4-year bachelor degrees from the University of Botswana are considered equivalent to a Diploma of Higher Education. 5-year bachelor degrees from the University of Botswana are considered equivalent to a British Bachelor (Ordinary) degree.

Students who have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

A Licenciatura or Bacharelado degree from a recognised Brazilian university:

• A grade of 7.5/10 for entry to programmes with a 2:1 requirement
• A grade of 6.5/10for entry to programmes with a 2:2 requirement

Holders of a good Bachelors degree with honours (4 to 6 years) from a recognised university with a upper second class grade or higher will be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes.  Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised university will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good post-2001 Masters degree from a recognised university will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students with a minimum average of 14 out of 20 (or 70%) on a 4-year Licence, Bachelor degree or Diplôme d'Etudes Superieures de Commerce (DESC) or Diplôme d'Ingénieur or a Maîtrise will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Holders of a bachelor degree with honours from a recognised Canadian university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. A GPA of 3.0/4, 7.0/9 or 75% is usually equivalent to a UK 2.1.

Holders of the Licenciado or equivalent Professional Title from a recognised Chilean university will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Applicants for PhD study will preferably hold a Magister degree or equivalent.

Students with a bachelor’s degree (4 years minimum) may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. However please note that we will only consider students who meet the entry guidance below.

Holders of the Licenciado/Professional Title from a recognised Colombian university will be considered for our Postgraduate Diploma and Masters degrees. Applicants for PhD degrees will normally have a Maestria or equivalent.

Holders of a good bachelor degree with honours (4 to 6 years) from a recognised university with a upper second class grade or higher will be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes.  Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised university will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good Bacclaureus (Bachelors) from a recognised Croatian Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 4.0 out of 5.0, vrlo dobar ‘very good’, or a Masters degree, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a Bachelors degree(from the University of the West Indies or the University of Technology) may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. A Class II Upper Division degree is usually equivalent to a UK 2.1. For further details on particular institutions please refer to the list below.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Masters degree or Mphil from the University of the West Indies.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree from a recognised institution with a minimum overall grade of 6.5 out of 10, or a GPA of 3 out of 4, and will usually be required to have completed a good Masters degree to be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Bakalár from a recognised Czech Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 1.5, B, velmi dobre ‘very good’ (post-2004) or 2, velmi dobre ‘good’ (pre-2004), or a good post-2002 Magistr (Masters), will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree from a recognised institution with a minimum overall grade of 7-10 out of 12 (or 8 out of 13) or higher for 2:1 equivalence and will usually be required to have completed a good Masters/ Magisterkonfereus/Magister Artium degree to be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of the Licenciado or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Ecuadorian university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Grades of 70% or higher can be considered as UK 2.1 equivalent.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Magister/Masterado or equivalent qualification, but holders of the Licenciado with excellent grades can be considered.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 75% from a recognised institution. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Bakalaurusekraad from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 4/5 or B, or a good one- or two-year Magistrikraad from a recognised university, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Masters degree with very good grades (grade B, 3.5/4 GPA or 85%) will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. 

Holders of a good Kandidaatti / Kandidat (old system), a professional title such as Ekonomi, Diplomi-insinööri, Arkkitehti, Lisensiaatti (in Medicine, Dentistry and Vetinary Medicine), or a Maisteri / Magister (new system), Lisensiaatti / Licenciat, Oikeustieteen Kandidaatti / Juris Kandidat (new system) or Proviisori / Provisor from a recognised Finnish Higher Education institution, with a minimum overall grade of 2/3 or 4/5, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters/Maîtrise with a minimum overall grade of 13 out of 20, or a Magistère / Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies / Diplôme d'Etudes Supérieures Specialisées / Mastère Specialis, from a recognised French university or Grande École to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a Magister Artium, a Diplom or an Erstes Staatsexamen from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 2.5, or a good two-year Lizentiat / Aufbaustudium / Zweites Staatsexamen or a Masters degree from a recognised university, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0 Students who have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good four-year Ptychio (Bachelor degree) with a minimum overall grade of 6.5 out of 10, from a recognised Greek university (AEI), and will usually be required to have completed a good Metaptychiako Diploma Eidikefsis (Masters degree) from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

4-year Licenciado is deemed equivalent to a UK bachelors degree. A score of 75 or higher from Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) can be considered comparable to a UK 2.1, 60 is comparable to a UK 2.2.  Private universities have a higher pass mark, so 80 or higher should be considered comparable to a UK 2.1, 70 is comparable to a UK 2.2

The Hong Kong Bachelor degree is considered comparable to British Bachelor degree standard. Students with bachelor degrees awarded by universities in Hong Kong may be considered for entry to one of our postgraduate degree programmes.

Students with Masters degrees may be considered for PhD study.

Holders of a good Alapfokozat / Alapképzés or Egyetemi Oklevel from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 3.5, or a good Mesterfokozat (Masters degree) or Egyetemi Doktor (university doctorate), will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with a 60% or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of the 4 year Sarjana (S1) from a recognised Indonesian institution will be considered for postgraduate study. Entry requirements vary with a minimum requirement of a GPA of 2.8.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a score of 14/20 or 70% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution, with 100 out of 110 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Students who hold the Maitrise, Diplome d'Etude Approfondies, Diplome d'Etude Superieures or Diplome d'Etude Superieures Specialisees will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees (14-15/20 or Bien from a well ranked institution is considered comparable to a UK 2.1, while a score of 12-13/20 or Assez Bien is considered comparable to a UK 2.2).

Students with a Bachelor degree from a recognised university in Japan will be considered for entry to a postgraduate Masters degree provided they achieve a sufficiently high overall score in their first (Bachelor) degree. A GPA of 3.0/4.0 or a B average from a good Japanese university is usually considered equivalent to a UK 2:1.

Students with a Masters degree from a recognised university in Japan will be considered for PhD study. A high overall grade will be necessary to be considered.

Students who have completed their Specialist Diploma Мамаң дипломы/Диплом специалиста) or "Magistr" (Магистр дипломы/Диплом магистра) degree (completed after 1991) from a recognised higher education institution, with a minimum GPA of 2.67/4.00 for courses requiring a UK lower second and 3.00/4.00 for courses requiring a UK upper second class degree, will be considered for entry to postgraduate Masters degrees and, occasionally, directly for PhD degrees.  Holders of a Bachelor "Bakalavr" degree (Бакалавр дипломы/Диплом бакалавра) from a recognised higher education institution, with a minimum GPA of  2.67/4.00 for courses requiring a UK lower second and 3.00/4.00 for courses requiring a UK upper second class degree, may also be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/50

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a score of 16/20 or 80% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised university in Libya will be considered for postgraduate study. Holders of a Bachelors degree will normally be expected to have achieved score of 70% for 2:1 equivalency or 65% for 2:2 equivalency. Alternatively students will require a minimum of 3.0/4.0 or BB to be considered.

Holders of a good pre-2001 Magistras from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 8 out of 10, or a good post-2001 Magistras, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes

Holders of a good Bachelors degree from a recognised Luxembourgish Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 16 out of 20, or a Diplôme d'Études Supérieures Spécialisées (comparable to a UK PGDip) or Masters degree from a recognised Luxembourgish Higher Education institution will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Masters degree will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees (70-74% or A or Marginal Distinction from a well ranked institution is considered comparable to a UK 2.1, while a score of 60-69% or B or Bare Distinction/Credit is considered comparable to a UK 2.2).

Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised Malaysian institution (usually achieved with the equivalent of a second class upper or a grade point average minimum of 3.0) will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level.

Holders of a good Bachelors degree from the University of Malta with a minimum grade of 2:1 (Hons), and/or a Masters degree, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree (Honours) from a recognised institution (including the University of Mauritius) will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.  Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2:1).

Students who hold the Licenciado/Professional Titulo from a recognised Mexican university with a promedio of at least 8 will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Students who have completed a Maestria from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree, licence or Maîtrise and a Masters degree, with a score of 14/20 or 70% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Students with a good four year honours degree from a recognised university will be considered for postgraduate study at the University of Birmingham. PhD applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with 60-74% or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Doctoraal from a recognised Dutch university with a minimum overall grade of 7 out of 10, and/or a good Masters degree, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree (minimum 4 years and/or level 400) from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.  Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree from a recognised institution with a minimum GPA of B/Very Good or 1.6-2.5 for a 2.1 equivalency, and will usually be required to have completed a good Masters, Mastergrad, Magister. Artium, Sivilingeniør, Candidatus realium or Candidatus philologiae degree to be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with a CGPA of 3.0/4 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised university in the Palestinian Territories will be considered for postgraduate study. Holders of Bachelors degree will normally be expected to have achieved a GPA of 3/4 or 80% for 2:1 equivalency or a GPA of 2.5/4 or 70% for 2:2 equivalency.    

Holders of the Título de Licenciado /Título de (4-6 years) or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Paraguayan university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Grades of 4/5 or higher can be considered as UK 2.1 equivalent.  The Título Intermedio is a 2-3 year degree and is equivalent to a HNC, it is not suitable for postgraduate entry but holders of this award could be considered for second year undergraduate entry or pre-Masters.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Título de Maestría / Magister or equivalent qualification, but holders of the Título/Grado de Licenciado/a with excellent grades can be considered.

Holders of the Licenciado, with at least 13/20 may be considered as UK 2.1 equivalent. The Grado de Bachiller is equivalent to an ordinary degree, so grades of 15+/20 are required.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Título de Maestría or equivalent qualification.

Holders of a good pre-2001 Magister from a recognised Polish university with a minimum overall grade of 4 out of 5, dobry ‘good’, and/or a good Swiadectwo Ukonczenia Studiów Podyplomowych (Certificate of Postgraduate Study) or post-2001 Magister from a recognised Polish university with a minimum overall grade of 4.5/4+ out of 5, dobry plus 'better than good', will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good Licenciado from a recognised university, or a Diploma de Estudos Superiores Especializados (DESE) from a recognised Polytechnic Institution, with a minimum overall grade of 16 out of 20, and/or a good Mestrado / Mestre (Masters) from a recognised university, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree from a recognised Romanian Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 8 out of 10, and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree/Diploma de Master/Diploma de Studii Academice Postuniversitare (Postgraduate Diploma - Academic Studies) or Diploma de Studii Postuniversitare de Specializare (Postgraduate Diploma - Specialised Studies) to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Диплом Специалиста (Specialist Diploma) or Диплом Магистра (Magistr) degree from recognised universities in Russia (minimum GPA of 4.0) will be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes/PhD study.

Students who hold a 4-year Bachelor degree with at least 16/20 or 70% will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.   

Students who hold a Maitrise, Diplome d'Etude Approfondies,Diplome d'Etude Superieures or Diplome d'Etude Superieures Specialisees will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. A score of 14-15/20 or Bien from a well ranked institution is considered comparable to a UK 2.1, while a score of 12-13/20 or Assez Bien is considered comparable to a UK 2.2

Students who hold a Bachelor (Honours) degree from a recognised institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0 (or a score of 60-69% or B+) from a well ranked institution will be considered for most our Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees with a 2:1 requirement.

Students holding a good Bachelors Honours degree will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level.

Holders of a good three-year Bakalár or pre-2002 Magister from a recognised Slovakian Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 1.5, B, Vel’mi dobrý ‘very good’, and/or a good Inžinier or a post-2002 Magister from a recognised Slovakian Higher Education institution will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good Diploma o pridobljeni univerzitetni izobrazbi (Bachelors degree), Diplomant (Professionally oriented first degree), Univerzitetni diplomant (Academically oriented first degree) or Visoko Obrazovanja (until 1999) from a recognised Slovenian Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 8.0 out of 10, and/or a good Diploma specializacija (Postgraduate Diploma) or Magister (Masters) will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor Honours degree (also known as Baccalaureus Honores / Baccalaureus Cum Honoribus) from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Most Masters programmes will require a second class upper (70%) or a distinction (75%).

Holders of a Masters degree will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a Bachelor degree from a recognised South Korean institution (usually with the equivalent of a second class upper or a grade point average 3.0/4.0 or 3.2/4.5) will be considered for Masters programmes.

Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with 7 out of 10 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with 60-74% or a CGPA 3.30/4.0 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Kandidatexamen (Bachelors degree) or Yrkesexamen (Professional Bachelors degree) from a recognised Swedish Higher Education institution with the majority of subjects with a grade of VG (Val godkänd), and/or a good Magisterexamen (Masters degree), International Masters degree or Licentiatexamen (comparable to a UK Mphil), will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good "PostGraduate Certificate" or "PostGraduate Diploma" or a Masters degree from a recognised Swiss higher education institution (with a minimum GPA of 5/6 or 8/10 or 2/5 (gut-bien-bene/good) for a 2.1 equivalence) may be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a GPA of 3.0/4.0, 3.5/5 or 75% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Bachelor degree (from 75% to 85% depending upon the university in Taiwan) from a recognised institution will be considered for postgraduate Masters study. Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.  Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) Students who have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for entry to our postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good Masters degree or Mphil from a recognised university will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students with a Bachelors degree from the following universities may be considered for entry to postgraduate programmes:

• Ateneo de Manila University - Quezon City
• De La Salle University - Manila
• University of Santo Tomas
• University of the Philippines - Diliman

Students from all other institutions with a Bachelors and a Masters degree or relevant work experience may be considered for postgraduate programmes.

Grading Schemes

Holders of a postdoctoral qualification from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.  Students may be considered for PhD study if they have a Masters from one of the above listed universities.

Holders of a Lisans Diplomasi with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0/4.0 from a recognised university will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level.

Holders of a Yuksek Diplomasi from a recognised university will be considered for PhD study.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Most Masters programmes will require a second class upper (2.1) or GPA of 3.5/5.0

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree / Диплом бакалавра (Dyplom Bakalavra), Диплом спеціаліста (Specialist Diploma) or a Dyplom Magistra from a recognised Ukrainian higher education institution with a minimum GPA of 4.0/5.0, 3.5/4, 8/12 or 80% or higher for 2:1 equivalence and will usually be required to have completed a good Masters degree to be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

The University will consider students who hold an Honours degree from a recognised institution in the USA with a GPA of:

• 2.8 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for entry to programmes with a 2:2 requirement 
• 3.2 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for entry to programmes with a 2:1 requirement 

Please note that some subjects which are studied at postgraduate level in the USA, eg. Medicine and Law, are traditionally studied at undergraduate level in the UK.

Holders of the Magistr Diplomi (Master's degree) or Diplomi (Specialist Diploma), awarded by prestigious universities, who have attained high grades in their studies will be considered for postgraduate study.  Holders of the Fanlari Nomzodi (Candidate of Science), where appropriate, will be considered for PhD study.

Holders of the Licenciatura/Título or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Venezuelan university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Scales of 1-5, 1-10 and 1-20 are used, an overall score of 70% or equivalent can be considered equivalent to a UK 2.1.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Maestria or equivalent qualification

Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised Vietnamese institution (usually achieved with the equivalent of a second class upper or a grade point average minimum GPA of 7.0 and above) will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level.  Holders of a Masters degree (thac si) will be considered for entry to PhD programmes.

Students who hold a Masters degree with a minimum GPA of 3.5/5.0 or a mark of 2.0/2.5 (A) will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.   

Students who hold a good Bachelor Honours degree will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Standard English language requirements  apply (IELTS: 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any band).

Sport and Exercise Science research at Swansea University takes place in the Applied Sports, Technology, Exercise and Medicine (A-STEM) research centre.

Research activity in Sport and Exercise Science is in three main areas:

With our flourishing research environment Swansea University provides an excellent base for your research as a PhD or MPhil student in Sports Science. Recent PhD's include:

• The use of ischemic preconditioning as a strategy for preconditioning, training and recovery within elite sport performance
• Development and evaluation of a support programme for parents of elite youth athletes
• Novel methods of conceptualising and measuring physical activity in children using 3D printing
• Investigating the Measurement of Physical Activity and its Impact on Quality of Life in Youth with Cystic Fibrosis

How you are Supervised

Your supervisor will:

• Help you develop your research plan in the early stages of your PhD
• Advise on research aims and objectives and suggest relevant training or skills courses
• Provide direction in terms of relevant literature and sources
• Give guidance on gathering, recording and analysing data
• Supervise your written work, providing constructive criticism and ensuring you keep to deadlines
• Support and advise you when it comes to presenting papers at conferences, publishing your work and attending your viva (the final oral examination of your thesis)

Tuition fees for years of study after your first year are subject to an increase of 3%.

PhD Programme Specification

This Programme Specification refers to the current academic year and provides indicative content for information. The University will seek to deliver each course in accordance with the descriptions set out in the relevant course web pages at the time of application. However, there may be situations in which it is desirable or necessary for the University to make changes in course provision , either before or after enrolment.

Programme Summary

This PhD in Sports Science at Swansea will enable you to undertake a substantial project led by your own interests. It is a highly respected qualification which can present a career in academia or a wider scope for employment in fields such as education, government or the private sector. A thesis of 100,000 words will be submitted for assessment demonstrating original research with a substantive contribution to the subject area. The PhD is examined following an oral examination of the thesis (a viva voce examination or viva voce). You will acquire research skills for high-level work and skills and training programmes are available on campus for further support. There will be an opportunity to deliver presentations to research students and staff at departmental seminars and conferences. There may also be opportunities to develop your teaching skills through undergraduate tutorials, demonstrations and seminars.

Programme Aims

This PhD programme will provide doctoral researchers with:

• The opportunity to conduct high quality postgraduate research in a world leading research environment.
• Key skills needed to undertake advanced academic and non-academic research including qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
• Advanced critical thinking, intellectual curiosity and independent judgement.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises three key elements:

• Entry and confirmation of candidature
• Main body of research
• Thesis and  viva voce  examination

The programme comprises of the undertaking of an original research project of 3 years duration full time (6 years duration part time). Doctoral researchers may pursue the programme either full time or part time by pursuing research at the University at an external place of employment or with/at a University approved partner.

Doctoral researchers for the PhD in Sports Science are examined in two parts.

The first part is a thesis which is an original body of work representing the methods and results of the research project. The maximum word limit is 100,000 for the main text. The word limit does not include appendices (if any), essential footnotes, introductory parts and statements or the bibliography and index.

The second part is an oral examination ( viva voce ).

Doctoral Researcher Supervision and Support

Doctoral researchers will be supervised by a supervisory team. Where appropriate, staff from Colleges/Schools other than the ‘home’ Department/School (other Colleges/Schools) within the University will contribute to cognate research areas. There may also be supervisors from an industrial partner.

The Primary/First Supervisor will normally be the main contact throughout the doctoral research journey and will have overall responsibility for academic supervision. The academic input of the Secondary Supervisor will vary from case to case. The principal role of the Secondary Supervisor is often as a first port of call if the Primary/First Supervisor becomes unavailable. The supervisory team may also include a supervisor from industry or a specific area of professional practice to support the research. External supervisors may also be drawn from other Universities.

The primary supervisor will provide pastoral support. If necessary the primary supervisor will refer the doctoral researcher to other sources of support (e.g. Wellbeing, Disability, Money Advice, IT, Library, Students’ Union, Academic Services, Student Support Services, Careers Centre).

• Conceptualise, design and implement a project aimed at the generation of new knowledge or applications within Sports Science.
• Make informed judgements on complex issues in the field of Sports Science, often in the absence of complete data and defend those judgements to an appropriate audience.

• Demonstrate self-awareness of individual and cultural diversity, and the reciprocal impact in social interaction between self and others when conducting research involving people.

Research Skills

Progression Monitoring

Progress will be monitored in accordance with Swansea University regulations. During the course of the programme, the Doctoral researcher is expected to meet regularly with their supervisors, and at most meetings it is likely that the doctoral researcher’s progress will be monitored in an informal manner in addition to attendance checks. Details of the meetings should ideally be recorded on the on-line system. A minimum of four formal supervision meetings is required each year, two of which will be reported to the Postgraduate Progression and Awards Board. During these supervisory meetings the doctoral researcher’s progress is discussed and formally recorded on the on-line system.

Swansea University’s Postgraduate Research Training Framework is structured into sections, to enable doctoral researchers to navigate and determine appropriate courses aligned to both their interest and their candidature stage. 

There is a training framework including for example areas of Managing Information and Data, Presentation and Public Engagement, Leadership and working with others, Safety Integrity and Ethics, Impact and Commercialisation and Teaching and Demonstrating. There is also range of support in areas such as training needs, literature searching, conducting research, writing up research, teaching, applying for grants and awards, communicating research and future careers.

A range of research seminars and skills development sessions are provided within the Department of Engineering and across the University. These are scheduled to keep the  doctoral researcher in touch with a broader range of material than their own research topic, to stimulate ideas in discussion with others, and to give them opportunities to such as defending their own thesis orally, and to identify potential criticisms. Additionally, the Department of Engineering is developing a research culture that aligns with the University vision and will link with key initiatives delivered under the auspices of the University’s Academies, for example embedding the HEA fellowship for postgraduate research students.

Course Information

Sport and exercise is a dynamic and fast-growing sector, and our MSc Sport and Exercise Science prepares you for a career in health, exercise intervention and sport education.     This course – designed for graduates and people currently working in sport and exercise science or a related area – offers the mix of critical thinking, expert knowledge and professional skills that employers seek.     It’s flexible, combining classroom, lab, sport facility and industry learning with a varied programme of study across a wide range of topics.       Learning takes place at two outstanding sporting facilities – the Institute of Sport and Manchester Met’s Platt Lane Sports Complex. The Institute unites expertise from across the University creating a wealth of opportunities to harness knowledge and collaborate beyond any single academic or sporting field. Our Sports Complex offers top-quality facilities including an indoor dome, outdoor football and rugby pitches, a fully equipped gym and a laboratory used by professional sportspeople and coaches.       On this course, you’ll gain the professional skills needed to confidently advise others and the research skills to carry out ethically sound, independent scientific research.      Throughout, you’ll be taught by experts in their field and have access to hi-tech laboratory and field-based equipment. You could, for example, be recording real-time movement of respiratory activity and hi-res images with access to our MRI scanner. Our climate chamber offers a chance to study the effect of different climates on blood flow, joints, posture, the mind and more, from sub-tropical heat to the top of Everest. Or maybe you’ll be trying out our virtual reality technology showing in detail how our eyes track a ball.      You’ll also get to further specialise in the main sciences in sport and exercise. Choosing physiology, biomechanics or psychology, you’ll learn how to work in a multidisciplinary team to achieve a shared goal. Crucially, from the word go you’ll have opportunities to address and discuss real-life issues in sport and exercise including the key areas of diversity, equality and inclusion.     Whether you’re interested in supporting people recovering from injury, becoming a senior researcher or a coach for a professional sports club, we’ll also help you to find a work placement that gives you valuable insight into your chosen career path. This is made possible thanks to our long-standing industry partnerships and is the best way to develop your skills in real world settings.

You'll study seven core units and two option units over this one-year course, including an independent research project.   

Professional Skills

This unit will focus on the development of the competencies and skills necessary for exercise and sport professionals to carry out informed practice. The unit will be shared with the other sport masters programmes.

Research Methods, Design and Data Analysis

This unit will extend your knowledge and understanding of the research process and develops your ability to carry out ethically sound, independent research and critically appraise research literature. It will also focus on the introduction to, and practice application of, a number of analytical methods found in quantitative and qualitative research.

Work Placement in Sport and Exercise

This unit will provide you with an opportunity to apply theory to practice in applied and vocational settings, developing your knowledge of professional and applied practice in sport and exercise. You will be required to undertake a work placement in a relevant setting environment, where you will apply and develop your understanding and competencies associated with working in sport and exercise science. The unit is shared with the other Sport masters programmes. 

Research Project

The aim of this unit is to design, conduct and communicate a major piece of independent research related to sport and exercise science. The unit will be shared with the other Sport masters programmes. 

Advance Laboratory Skills in Sport and Exercise Science

This unit will develop your understanding and skills of laboratory techniques used in sport and exercise science. There will be opportunity to gain hands on experience of using equipment and associated assessment strategies as used by sport and exercise scientists with a range of populations. This unit will also enhance your knowledge of good laboratory practice, organization and data processing. 

Working in Sport and Exercise Science

This unit will help you develop key practical and theoretical competencies associated with providing sport and exercise science support. Specifically, you will have opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of interdisciplinary teamwork to solve real-world problems drawing across the sport and exercise disciplines. 

Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity in Sport and Exercise

This unit will help you develop key practical and theoretical competencies associated with providing sport and exercise science support. Specifically, you will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of interdisciplinary teamwork to solve real-world problems drawing across the sport and exercise disciplines. 

Option units

Advanced exercise physiology.

This unit introduces you to advanced fundamental and applied cardiovascular and respiratory physiology incorporating the impact of exercise, environmental stress and chronic cardiorespiratory diseases. You’ll also develop an understanding of applied molecular genetics in sport and exercise.

Biological Basis of Human Movement

This unit aims to deepen your understanding of the biological basis of human movement from the cellular to whole body level. Skeletal muscle is of primary importance for human movement. Therefore, this unit covers the fundamentals necessary for an appreciation of skeletal muscle function in vitro and in vivo. 

Biomechanics and Motor Control of Movement

This unit consolidates and expands your knowledge of biomechanical principles. You’ll review concepts from undergraduate biomechanics, including, but not limited to:

• linear and angular kinematics and kinetics
• work, power, and energy
• body segment parameters
• standard data collection techniques.  

The unit will also introduce you to advanced concepts, including signal processing, 2D inverse dynamics and modelling, plus 3D forces and moments.

Biomechanics: Methods and Skills

This unit expands your knowledge of biomechanical principles and enables you to put the knowledge and skills gained from previous biomechanics units into a practical context. You’ll apply theory to data collection and analysis methods in the laboratory setting as well as testing in the field.   It’s designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate equipment safely, effectively, and ethically as a biomechanist within the sport and exercise domain.

Contemporary Issues in Sport and Exercise Psychology

This unit allows you to critically evaluate contemporary issues within sport and exercise psychology. A key emphasis will be placed on critically evaluating relevant theories and developing a comprehensive understanding of the implications for applied practice. You’ll focus on the key research strengths of staff within the department. Broad themes may centre around: 

• stress, coping and emotions
• mental health and well-being
• issues around working in elite sport. 

Study and assessment breakdown

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A masters qualification typically comprises of 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits and an MFA 300 credits. The exact composition of your study time and assessments for the course will vary according to your option choices and style of learning, but it could be:

• Full-time 20% lectures, seminars or similar; 10% placement; 70% independent study
• Full-time 100% coursework; 0% practical; 0% examination

You’ll need a UK honours degree – at least a 2.2 – typically in a related area or in an area of study accompanied by professional or personal experience. Applicants with relevant extensive professional experience in this field will be considered for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Accredited Prior Experience (APE) entrance, even if they do not have the required qualifications.    IELTS score required for international students 6.5 with no element below 5.5.    Further information for international students is available for applicants with non-UK qualifications is available at mmu.ac.uk/international

Full-time fee: £9,500 per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Additional Information

A masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits, and an MFA 300 credits. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of study provided the course is completed in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Students will be required to travel between specialist facilities, such as our All Saints and Platt Lane sites, and may need to travel if taking work experience placements. An annual bus pass for travel around Manchester costs approximately £240 (indicative).

Kit: Students are required to contribute a one-off payment for kit of £50 at the point of course entry. Any replacement kit required over the period of study will be supplied and paid for by the Department. This kit should be worn at all practical and lab sessions.

Students often choose to buy a laptop for their course (costing approximately £400-500) and a printer (costing £50 to £100 including print consumables). All of the readings required for the course are available from the library, but some students may choose to purchase key textbooks (costing approximately £100).

Sport and exercise is a growing and exciting industry with around 400,000 people working in the physical activity sector in England alone (Sporting Future Strategy, UK Gov). Hugely popular and successful events like the UEFA European Women's Championship and the Commonwealth Games are having a big impact and driving the demand for ever more highly qualified professionals to work in this field.       Our MSc could lead to a wide range of possible career opportunities and professions. These include academic research, elite sport, public health and wellbeing or employment in major businesses, sporting bodies or clubs. You might decide to work for yourself, perhaps in the fast-growing digital fitness sector or running your own coaching or consultancy business.     Previous graduates from the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences have worked with professional football teams, become personal trainers, gone on to take a teaching qualification and worked in schools, or go into sport administration. Some have also worked for sporting governing bodies, in higher education and in health settings within the NHS.     Whatever career path you choose, with a strong and solid grounding in the science behind sport and exercise, you’ll have a lot to offer and many possibilities to explore.

• Exercise Science

Bachelor of Science Degree

Our undergraduate degree program is nationally accredited by the council for the accreditation of educator preparation (caep) and approved by the state of tennessee., the various b.s. degree concentrations allow students to select from an array of professional and pre-professional fields of study., undergraduate concentrations.

Our Exercise Physiology program offers a strong foundation in fitness/wellness, with an emphasis on the physiology of exercise, kinesiology, and career preparation as a sports medical professional. Graduates will possess the ability to review, evaluate, and study the body's responses to physical activity as well as how the body adapts to that activity over time.

Kinesiology is the scientific study of human or non-human body movement and addresses physiological, biomechanical, and psychological dynamic principles/mechanisms of movement.

Experience cutting-edge courses in exercise science, develop sports skills, integrate technology and exercise, learn instructional strategies and games while you prepare for a successful career doing what you love.

One-year residencies in local school systems are classroom immersion experiences for training future our educators.

The Physical Education Practitioner concentration is a non-licensure degree. Practitioners have access to a variety of courses and interactive experiences preparing graduates with a strong foundation and superior skills for an array of careers in physical education. Those include integrating instructional technology, physical fitness, support services, program management, and more.

Learn about physical wellness strategies for all ages, management and organizational behavior, performance, training, adapted physical activities, and psychology.

Experience courses in sport management and organization, coaching, officiating, sports governance and ethics, the psychology of sport, and marketing.

This concentration prepares students for the next step — entering a quality master’s program to continue their education as a medical professional.

Your undergraduate training includes not only courses in physiology, physical wellness, and the sciences, but also interactive field experiences with actual clients in a clinical setting.

The Pre-Physician Assistant concentration offers pre-professionals a comprehensive, foundational program in the medical sciences, clinical settings, patient interaction, and evaluation preparing our graduates to successfully pursue the next steps in their professional programs and careers.

PAs carry out many of the same functions as traditional physicians, including examining patients, prescribing medicine, and ordering diagnostic tests. Generally, PAs work under the supervision of physicians or surgeons.
