UZH for Researchers

Quicklinks und sprachwechsel, main navigation, funding for phd researchers, table of contents, 1. phd / research at uzh, 2 research stay abroad, 3. phd research abroad.

The question of whether and how to do a doctorate depends to a large extent on how to finance it. Basically, there are two possibilities: through a employment at UZH or by pursuing a professional activity outside the university.

Employment at the University can take place in different ways: You have the opportunity to apply for a position as an assistant or doctoral candidate. Information about open doctoral positions is best obtained directly from your supervisor or on the UZH job platform . Or you can raise funds independently to finance your doctorate. Below you will find funding instruments where doctoral researchers can apply for fellowships or a project funds.

The following opportunities enable you to fully or partially finance your doctoral research at UZH. This overview is not exhaustive. Be sure to inquire about specific funding opportunities in your department or faculty.

Mobility experience is of great importance for a academic career. The following programmes offer financial support for a stay abroad during doctoral research.

In some cases, it is a good idea to pursue your doctoral degree at a university abroad. You should inquire at suitable universities about receiving a grant.

It is also possible to earn your doctorate at two universities: In a cotutelle de thèse program, PhD researchers can be enrolled in two universities at the same time. The program requires students to spend at least a third of the time at the partner university; upon completion of the degree, both universities will issue a diploma.

Great information. I’m actually looking forward to studying in Switzerland so this is very useful ;).

Happy to help, Sebastian. 🙂

Good morning. I am Adam Iddrisu, reaching you from Ghana. I graduated from the University of South Africa with a Bachelor of Administration, double majored in Public Administration and Development Studies. I also went further to do an Honours degree in Development Studies, which is considered to be a post-graduate qualification in South Africa. I saw an invitation for applications for the Executive Master in Development Policies and Practices at the Graduate Institute, Geneva. I applied and was shortlisted. I have since been interviewed and I am sure I will be part of the successful applicants. The fee to be paid by the applicants from Africa is CHF 3500. I know the Swiss government has done us a favour by giving us this amount to pay for the program. Successful applicants from other parts of the globe will be paying CHF 25000 yet I cannot pay the CHF 3500.

This is a life time opportunity and missing this great opportunity, following the lack of funding, will be a great misfortune. Here, the lack of financial resources will prevent me from reaching my potential.

I would be grateful if some kind of financial aid could be made available to enable me reach my potential. Thank you.

Kind regards,

Adam Iddrisu
