How to Write an IELTS Essay

In this introductory lesson you will find some guidance on how you should write an  IELTS essay .

There are then more lessons on the following pages for different types of essay and different questions, with lots of tips and strategies for achieving a high score.

Essay Types

It is important to learn about IELTS essays because there are different essay types, and these will require different ways to answer them.

However, as you will see from the guidance on this page, they can all follow the same basic structure.

These are some of the types of IELTS essays you can get in the test: 

• Agree / disagree
• Discuss two opinions
• Advantages & disadvantages
• Causes (reasons) & solutions
• Causes (reasons) & effects
• Problems & solutions

Not every essay will fit one of these patterns, but many do.

You may get some of these tasks mixed up. For example, you could be asked to give your opinion on an issue, and then discuss the advantages or disadvantages of it.

The golden rule is to  ALWAYS read the question very carefully  to see exactly what you are being asked to do.

How do I Write an IELTS Essay?

In order to answer this, lets first look at a sample question:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

In the last 20 years there have been significant developments in the field of information technology (IT), for example the World Wide Web and communication by email. However, these developments in IT are likely to have more negative effects than positive in the future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

An IELTS essay is structured like any other essay; you just need to make it shorter. There are three key elements:

• Introduction
• Body Paragraphs

We will look at each of these in turn, using the essay question above as an example.

1) Introduction

You should keep your introduction for the IELTS essay short. Remember you only have 40 minutes to write the essay, and some of this time needs to be spent planning. Therefore, you need to be able to write your introduction fairly quickly so you can start writing your body paragraphs.

You should do just two things:

• State the topic of the essay, using some basic facts (that you may be able to take from the question)
• Say what you are going to write about

Here is an example introduction for the above essay question about IT:

The last two decades have seen enormous changes in the way people's lives are affected by IT, with many advances in this field. However, while these technological advances have brought many benefits to the world, I strongly believe that these developments in IT will result in more negative impacts than positive.

As you can see, the first sentence makes sure it refers to the topic (IT) and uses facts about IT taken from the question. Note that these are paraphrased - you must not copy from the rubric!

The second part then clearly sets out the what the essay will be about and confirms the writers opinion (some questions may not ask for your opinion, but this one does). The writer clearly agrees as he/she thinks there will be more negative impacts.

2) Body Paragraphs

For an IELTS essay, you should have 2 or 3 body paragraphs - no more, and no less.

For your body paragraph, each paragraph should contain one controlling idea, and have sentences to support this.

Lets look at the first paragraph for the essay about IT. The essay is about the benefits and drawbacks of IT, so these will need to be discussed in separate paragraphs.

Here is the first body paragraph:

On the positive side, email has made communication, especially abroad, much simpler and faster. This has resulted in numerous benefits for commerce and business as there is no need to wait weeks for letters or take time sending faxes, which was the case in the past. Furthermore, the World Wide Web means that information on every conceivable subject is now available to us. For example, people can access news, medical advice, online education courses and much more via the internet.  These developments have made life far easier and more convenient for many.

The controlling idea in this first paragraph is the 'benefits of IT', and there are two supporting ideas, which are underlined. No drawbacks are discussed as the paragraph would then lose coherence.

Most of the essay will focus on the negative aspects of IT, as the writer says there are more negative effects in the introduction. So the next two paragraphs are about these.

The topic sentence in the next paragraph therefore tells us we are changing the focus to the negative points:

Nevertheless, the effects of this new technology have not all been beneficial. For example, many people feel that the widespread use of email is destroying traditional forms of communication such as letter writing, telephone and face-to-face conversation. This could result in a decline in people's basic ability to socialize and interact with each other on a day-to-day basis.

The final body paragraph gives the last negative effect:

In addition, the large size of the Web has meant that it is nearly impossible to regulate and control. This has led to many concerns regarding children accessing unsuitable websites and the spread of computer viruses. Unfortunately, this kind of problem might even get worse in the future at least until more regulated systems are set up.

3) Conclusion

The conclusion only needs to be one or two sentences, and you can do the following:

• Re-state what the essay is about (re-write the last sentence of your introduction in different words)
• Give some thoughts about the future

Here is an example:

In conclusion, developments in IT have brought many benefits, yet I believe that these are outweighed by the drawbacks. In the future these will need to be addressed if we are to avoid damaging impacts on individuals and society.

The Full IELTS Essay

The last two decades have seen enormous changes in the way people's lives are affected by IT, with many advances in this field. However, while these technological advances have brought many benefits to the world, I strongly believe that these developments in IT will result in more negative impacts than positive.

Nevertheless, the effects of this new technology have not all been beneficial. For example, many people feel that the widespread use of email is destroying traditional forms of communication such as letter writing, telephone and face-to-face conversation. This could result in a decline in people's basic ability to socialize and interact with each other on a day-to-day basis.

The IELTS essay introduction talks in general about the increasing use of IT, thus introducing the topic well. The thesis then clearly sets out the writers opinion.

The following paragraph mentions the present benefits of these developments, but the opening sentence in the third paragraph is a qualifying statement (Nevertheless, not all the effects... ), so the writer can now focus on the negative elements.

The fourth paragraph provides two other negative examples (lack of regulation, viruses). Both paragraphs suggest that these problems will continue in the future.

The essay concludes with a clear opinion that agrees with the statement.

Overall, it is a well-balanced text that mentions the present situation ( ...this has made life.. .) but importantly, also refers to the future of IT (. ..likely to increase..., might get worse. ..).

10 steps to writing high-scoring IELTS essays

Whether you take the general training or academic IELTS test, the second writing task is writing an essay in response to a problem or argument. Here are 10 easy steps, with lots of tips, to guide you on how to write high-scoring essays.

Fairness and accuracy are critically important when marking IELTS writing tasks . Your essay will be marked by at least two experienced IELTS examiners on the following criteria:

Task response - Whether you answered the question fully and supported your answer well. 

Coherence and cohesion - How well you linked your ideas together. 

Lexical resource - Whether you used a wide range of vocabulary correctly and appropriately. 

Grammatical range and accuracy - How many grammatical structures you used accurately and appropriately. 

Each of these criteria is worth 25% of your total score for the essay writing task. Both of your writing tasks are used to calculate your overall writing band score.

How to write high-scoring essays in 10 easy steps.

The Writing test (consisting of Writing tasks 1 and 2) takes approximately 60 minutes. Plan to spend around 20 minutes on your first task, and 40 minutes on your essay task. A sample plan for your time might be:

15 to 20 minutes writing your first draft

10 minutes proofreading and editing your essay

How to write a good introduction

While you may be anxious to jump straight into writing, make sure you take the time to carefully read the essay question. If you misunderstand the question, you risk writing an essay that does not address the issues properly which will lower your score.

There will be multiple issues that you will need to address in your essay. Addressing each issue individually is key to achieving a high essay score. Highlight each individual issue that you will need to address.

The A to Z of IELTS: E is for Essays

Create an outline of how you will respond to the issues in your essay. This will serve as your ‘blueprint’ when you write your first draft. As a general rule your essay should have:

An introduction stating what you will talk about

Two or three body paragraphs , each addressing one issue or idea

A conclusion summing up what was discussed in the essay

Make sure you note which idea or issue you will address in each paragraph. Check that the issues you highlighted are all accounted for in your outline.

Write some notes about any key points or ideas you’d like to include in each paragraph. When you’re writing your first draft, these notes will help to make sure you don’t forget any ideas you want to include.

Mind maps to build your vocabulary resource for IELTS

Connecting your ideas clearly and correctly is critical to achieving a high essay score. Try to use a range of linking words to make your essay easy to read. You can use connecting devices and phrases to:

List connected ideas

‘Firstly, secondly, thirdly’

‘Furthermore’

Provide more information

Compare ideas.

‘On the other hand’

‘Alternatively’

Don’t fall into the trap of trying to put a linking word in every sentence. Essays will score higher when the writer uses linking words only where necessary and appropriate.

Now that you’ve planned your essay, it’s time to write your first draft. Follow the outline you’ve created and expand on the notes and ideas you included there. 

Avoid informal language unless it is appropriate.

Avoid spelling and grammatical errors where possible.

Use a mix of sentence structures such as simple sentences, complex sentences and compound sentences.

How to boost your IELTS Writing score

When you have completed the first draft of your essay, it’s important to proofread it. Read your essay from start to finish.

You can read it silently, but it may help to read it out loud if you can do so without disturbing others. Make a mental note or mark your paper anywhere that you may need to fix an issue.

How to access FREE official IELTS mock tests

Carefully go through the issues you noted while proofreading. Edit or rewrite these until they look and sound correct. Examples of issues and how to edit them may include:

The sentence is too long. A sentence is probably too long if you need to take a breath in the middle of reading it. Try splitting this up into smaller sentences.

A sentence sounds strange when you read it out loud. Try using different words or punctuation until it sounds right. It may need to be connected to another sentence.

The same word appears many times. Think about any other words you could use instead.

There is more than one main idea in each paragraph. Move any unrelated sentences to the correct paragraph. Each paragraph should address one issue only.

After your edits and before submitting your essay , give it one final proofread. Make sure you have:

Included all the points you highlighted in step three

Followed your outline from step four

Used good connecting words from step six

Fixed any errors or issues in step nine

How should I score this practice Writing section?

Once you’ve finished your section, it’s time to score the tasks. First things first: review the band descriptors for Task 1 and Task 2 .

Then, take a closer look at your essays, rereading them to evaluate how well they meet the criteria in each of the four categories.

It can be very difficult to score your own essay objectively, so working with a scoring partner is useful here. That said, if you’re scoring your responses on your own, you can ask yourself the following questions to help determine your band level for each criterion:

• Did your Task 1 word count exceed the 150 word minimum, and did your Task 2 word count exceed the 250 word minimum? If not, do not give yourself full points for “Task Response.”
• Did you address each part of the task? Break down the prompt into different parts. Then, match each part of the prompt to part of your essay. If you did not address one or more parts of the task, do not give yourself full points for “Task Response.”
• Does each paragraph have its own clear topic sentence and supporting details? If not, then take some points away in “Coherence and Cohesion.”
• Do the tasks use adequate transitional language to tie paragraphs together and move from the paragraph to the conclusion? If not, do not give yourself full points for “Coherence and Cohesion.”
• Do you use vocabulary clearly and fluently, avoiding serious errors in word choice, and varying word choice to avoid repetition? If not, your self-score in “Lexical Resource” should not be perfect.
• Do you use grammar with confidence and skill, with no serious mistakes? And do you use a variety of sentence structures? If the answer to any of that is “no,” give yourself a less-than-perfect score in “Grammatical Range and Accuracy.”

IELTS essay templates pdf

Learn structures for different types of essays.

There is a limited range of types of questions that get asked in your IELTS test and you should learn how to write and structure each of these different types of essays. This is because it will save you time in your real test and allow you to have a better quality essay.

Templates for common types of IELTS essays

After you have established the structures for different types of essays you can work on templates for each of the structures. The advantage of using templates is that it can help you to speed up the writing of your essay; and also help you to increase your score as you have a lower proportion of errors, and also increase your score for vocabulary and grammar because the template has high-level vocabulary and grammar embedded in it. Note that the examiner will not consider this memorised language because this is structural language that is essential to writing an essay. memorised language would be something you have memorised relating to a specific topic that you have memorised from an article or published online essay.

Template for opinion essay

The template below has been used to write the second version of the essay.

Introduction There is currently a contentious argument over whether XYZ [XYZ is the topic] I totally agree/disagree with this opinion because

[reason 1 + reason 2]

Paragraph 2 The main reason why I believe/don’t believe XYZ is because… [reason 1]

Paragraph 3 Another reason why I support/don’t support the notion that XYZ is due to the fact that… [reason 2]

Conclusion In conclusion, I completely agree/disagree that XYZ because [rephrase reason 1] and [rephrase reason 2].

Given this situation, it seems that [give a final recommendation or opinion]

Model opinion essay

There is currently a contentious argument over whether family life is being harmed by the high-speed and pressure of contemporary lifestyles. I totally agree with this opinion because the fast pace leads to less time for families to be together, and stress leads to arguments among family members.

The main reason why I believe family life is being compromised is because families have less time to be with each other. This is due to family members being busier at work and with their social lives. As well as this, people have many things they have to do these days such as checking e-mail, updating their online social status and so less time is left for family life. To illustrate, I spend about two hours online every night attending to daily correspondence before chatting with my family members, whereas ten years ago I would spend time with my family as soon as I walked in the door.

Another reason why I support the notion that families are being impacted negatively is that the pressure of life these days means that even when families do get together arguments are more likely. This is because everyone feels tired and they are more likely to get irritated and to react to their heightened emotional levels.

In conclusion, I completely agree that the rapid pace and stressful nature of contemporary lifestyles are having negative consequences on family relationships. This is because family members have less time, and when they are together they feel less relaxed. Given this situation, it seems that family members should try to be more supportive to one another and also parents need to set aside regular times for families to relax together.        [281 words]

Template for a both sides and opinion essay

The template below contains about 130 words. The advantage of this template is that it can be used for any type of both sides and opinion essay. Memorising and using this template can help you to speed up the writing of your essay [you have less language to think of], and also help you to increase your score as you have a lower proportion of errors, and also increase your score for vocabulary and grammar because the template has high-level vocabulary and grammar embedded in it.

INTRODUCTION A highly controversial issue today relates to whether to have… [issue]… or not. In this essay, I am going to examine this question from both points of view and then explain why I believe….

BODY PARAGRAPH 1 There are people who argue that the benefits of ……………. considerably outweigh its disadvantages. The main reason for believing this is that …………………. It is also possible to say that ……. One good illustration of this is ………….

BODY PARAGRAPH 2 On the other hand, others believe that….. It is often argued that ……….. People often have this opinion because …………… A second point is that ………..A particularly good example here is…………..

CONCLUSION In conclusion, I believe both arguments have their merits. On balance, however, I feel that… This is because….

Model essay for a both sides and opinion essay

A highly controversial issue today relates to whether to have capital punishment or not. In this essay, I am going to examine this question from both points of view and then explain why I believe the arguments for capital punishment are stronger.

There are people who argue that the benefits of killing violent criminals considerably outweigh its disadvantages. The main reason for believing this is that the fear of execution acts as a deterrent to commit serious crimes such as rape and murder. It is also possible to say that the execution of a criminal may bring relief to the suffering victims. One good illustration of this is when Saddam Hussein was executed. Many of the victims who were persecuted under his rule expressed joy and relief when he was finally captured and killed.

On the other hand, others believe that the death penalty is not morally just. It is often argued that sentencing criminals to death is just committing another murder. People often have this opinion because they think that it is immoral to take another person’s life, no matter what the reason is. A second point is that many religions are opposed to any form of murder. A particularly good example here is from the Bible or Quran, which lists killing another person as one of the most severe sins

In conclusion, I believe both arguments have their merits. On balance, however, I feel that capital punishment is justified. This is because in cases of extreme crime and that deterring crime is more important than taking the moral high ground.       [261 words]

Template for a two-question essay

It is difficult to build a standardised template for our two-question essay because a wide variety of questions can be asked. First, a general template will be given and then a more specific template will be given for a typical problem and solution essay.

General template Introduction Rephrase the topic this essay discusses…[Question one] + [question two]

Body Question one [try to write two main points to respond to this question] Question two [try to write two main points to respond to this question]

Conclusion In conclusion, [summarise the two main points about question one] [summarise the two main points about question two]

Template for the problem and solution essay that follows with gaps for the topic Note that this is the original form of a two question essay that gets asked and it is essentially the same as the essay above and follows the same format. The question type is quite commonplace and you can use the template below for any essay of this type.

……………. is becoming increasingly serious in many nations. Although ……………. Threaten[s] many societies, its /their effects can also be combated successfully. This essay looks at some of the problems caused by ……………. on society, and suggests some solutions to the problems.

……………. causes multiple problems. The ……………. effects are very obvious. For example, ……………. In some cases, such as ……………. even leads to (death). The second effect is ……………. People who ……………. become …………….

However, the menace of ……………. can be fought. Education is the main way to tackle this issue. People need to be aware of the effects so that they can avoid this problem. In addition, the government could also …………….. This is a good approach because …………….

In conclusion, ……………. is a serious issue because it causes harmful effects on people’s health and people who are ……………. The best approaches to deal with it are to educate people about its damaging effects, and also for the government to …………….. Although the problem is unlikely to be entirely eliminated in the short term there are concrete steps to reduce the effects it is having on the current society. [about 175 words]

Model essay:

Drug abuse is becoming increasingly serious in many nations. Although drugs threaten many societies, their effects can also be combated successfully. This essay looks at some of the problems caused by drug use on society, and suggests some solutions to the problems.

Drug abuse causes multiple problems for countries and communities. The medical effects are very obvious. For example, addicts abuse their bodies and neglect their health, and so eventually require expensive treatment or hospitalization. In some cases, such as Marilyn Monroe, a drug overdose even leads to death. The second effect is crime. People who take drugs become crazy and irrational and often cause harm and danger to themselves and others.

However, the menace of drugs can be fought. Education is the main way to tackle this issue. People need to be aware of the effects so that they can avoid this problem. In addition, the government could also use infomercials to educate their citizens. This is a good approach because they can alert all citizens about the negative aspects of using drugs.

In conclusion, drug abuse is a serious issue because it causes harmful effects on people’s health and people who are high often commit crimes. The best approaches to deal with it are to educate people about its damaging effects, and also for the government to ensure all people are aware of the consequences through public service advertising. Although the problem is unlikely to be entirely eliminated in the short term these are concrete steps to reduce the effects it is having on the current society.

Study good quality examples

It is a good idea to study high quality writing styles in different formats by looking at newspapers or short articles in general-interest magazines on a variety of subjects. 

In magazines or newspapers, it can be useful to:

• underline useful vocabulary items
• underline and highlight grammar structures
• underline linking devices between sentences and paragraphs
• apply what you have learned to your own writing.

Practice for both of the writing tasks. Looking at good quality examples can help.

The Financial Times, for example, often provides tables and diagrams to illustrate texts on such things as the stock exchange which can serve as a useful model for Task 1 of the Academic Writing test. Short articles on topical subjects can be found in publications such as The Economist or, at a simpler level, free tabloids used by commuters going to and from work.

Practise test topics

Look at IELTS practice tests and choose topics which interest you. Use a variety of practice questions and try writing within both the time and word limits. It is important to have a go and not let nervousness stop you from trying.

Tasks and timing

Be aware of the different writing requirements for Task 1 and Task 2.  

In IELTS Academic, Task 1 involves describing aspects of one of the following:

Task 2 often involves:

• expressing an opinion
• balancing an argument
• suggesting a solution to a problem.

You will need to develop the most appropriate written language for each task to succeed in the Writing test.

Timing is very important. Remember that Task 1 is worth around one third of the total marks in the test, while Task 2 is worth roughly two thirds. It is important not to spend too much time on Task 1 or you will not leave yourself enough time to perform well in Task 2.

Hello! My name is David S. Wills and I’m an IELTS tutor from the United Kingdom. In this book, I aim to give an overview of important English language grammar to help you get through the IELTS writing exam. This is by no means an exhaustive text – for that you’d need a book with more than a thousand pages! However, I think it is a good basic guide to the most important grammar points needed for IELTS.

Grammar for IELTS Writing is intended as a handbook. That means it is for reference purposes. It is not a textbook, so there are no exercises to do. It contains essential information about the most important parts of English concerning IELTS candidates, and is structured from basic to advanced. If you read the whole of this book and apply its lessons to your writing, you will be on course for a high band score in the IELTS writing exam.

Model Essays For IELTS Writing   Study Guide

To get a good writing score, you need good preparation and practice. These tips may be right for one person but not for another. If you find it useful, apply it for yourself!

Preparation is a rather lengthy and frustrating process, often lasting more than a month. However, writing the article later will be challenging if you do not prepare well. First, you need to thoroughly review the  Grammar  section and increase your vocabulary before entering the battle round.

Types of dills

In  IELTS , present simple, present continuous, future simple, and present perfect are used most. The types are different, but I think you don’t need to care.

Conditional sentences

This is the kind of sentence where you will score grammar points so try to use it. Only conditional sentences type 3 (not really in the past) are rarely used, the rest should be carefully reviewed in the article.

Comparison sentence

In fact, more than 50% of essays have comparative sentences, more or less. Usually, you are wrong in this type of sentence because the use of the structure is not parallel to each other.

Using the wrong article is a prevalent mistake, not only for Vietnamese students but also for other IELTS test takers worldwide. I also get this error often during writing practice, so I have little experience. Please remember:

• For singular nouns, using the article “a/an” or “the” is mandatory. We only use “the” if the noun has something to help the reader understand what we are referring to.
• Some cases do not comply with this rule.
• For uncountable nouns, there is no article in front. Only use THE if there is an “of” which means “of”. It would help if you did the article exercises in grammar books or have someone well-qualified to check your writing.

Learning the IELTS writing format and marking criteria does not take too much time. Task 1, which accounts for 33% of your final score, is usually a graph, process, or map description. You just need to learn some comparative structures, a few words that show an increase and decrease, and groups of words that show displacement to be able to write. There are also some such vocabulary and structures in this book, which you can learn from.

Some notes   for Model Essays For IELTS Writing

• A brief introduction, usually 1 sentence. Only in some cases (such as having two charts mixed together) would two sentences be used.
• Overall, the main feature is also usually 1 to 2 sentences. This part can be left right after the introduction or at the end of the article, but it must be there.
• Details should be arranged into 2-3 paragraphs depending on the article. Each passage plays a different role than the others. For example, paragraph 1 is about the increasing group, paragraph 2 is about the decreasing group. Or paragraph 1 about the change of the northern area of ​​the map, paragraph 2 about the change of the southern area, for example.
• Task 1 does not need a conclusion. You can write in it, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t.
• For line graph: Start point and end point. In the middle, describe the highlights.
• For bar chart: Events with the same trend are grouped. Do not separate each event.
• For tables: Multiple columns are divided by columns, and many rows are divided by rows.
• For process, diagram: Specify how many processes start and end with what process.
• For Maps: if it’s a map that compares changes, how does the function change? Divide into regions and compare the difference in each area.
• For mixed format: Each paragraph describes a chart, do not compare charts with each other.
• The exam marking criteria are Task response (directly answering the question and your level of support argument).
• Coherence (coherence, easy to understand), Vocabulary (vocabulary) and Grammar (grammar).
• You should focus on handling the Task response carefully and limit mistakes when writing articles. You should read this ebook carefully for common mistakes, good vocabulary, good ideas and sample lessons for reference.

• English Vocabulary in Use PDF: This is a huge vocabulary book. Reading IELTS 9.0 masters often recommend studying in this book.
• Latest Cambridge Vocabulary for IELTS [pdf + audio]: This book is an academic vocabulary for Writing. Accompanying the vocabulary are collocations and audio to help you learn how to listen. Nice copy.
• Book Check your vocabulary for the IELTS examination: I must say that I enjoyed this book. Part of the reason is that the vocabulary is divided into specific topics, convenient to look up. The vocabulary in this book is very good, not only for IELTS but also for your future purposes. The advice is to print this file and then study it daily for 5-10 new words.

In the first few weeks, don’t expect too much. At the fastest, you can only review basic grammar and learn some new vocabulary. The vocabulary part, you can study strictly during the exam preparation process later, not necessarily learning too many words in a short time.

Methods of learning vocabulary also have many. One of the easiest ways is to make flashcards and take it with you when you go to school. Take advantage of the free time of the day and learn vocabulary. Another way to learn vocabulary is to make sentences with that word. Look up the dictionary to understand the meaning of words and try to write sentences with similar contexts. You are learning while practising will help you remember vocabulary much faster.
